Mayweather is probably, as of this moment, the second most well-known active fighter next to Oscar, he commands tens of millions, has crossover appeal, is rated as the best fighter in the world by the bible of boxing Ring magazine, has beaten the linear champion at lightweight and welterweight, then he beat the linear lt-welter champ (albeit at welter), he beat Oscar in the biggest fight (arguably) in a quarter-century, so to him Miguel Cotto means nothing. To the man in the street Miguel Cotto is a nobody. To us boxing fans, yeah Miguel is a superstar, a warrior, a tremendous fighter, he is a genuine challenge to Floyd, but you have to understand Mayweathers mindset. I want to see the fight as much as the next guy

I am still utterly shocked that people who call themselves boxing fans are defending the statement that Cotto is not important.

Even more shocking is that these same people defend a Hatton rematch.

My parents know who Oscar De La Hoya is. They don't know who Ricky Hatton or Miguel Cotto is. Neither Hatton or Cotto is a name to people who don't follow the sport.

SO... if the argument against a fight with Cotto is merely exposure, then Mayweather can only fight Oscar De La Hoya (unless he can lure Tyson or Ray Leonard out of retirement). If the argument against a fight with Cotto is his resume, and that he is not a star... I don't know how the **** these same people can defend the decision to fight Ricky Hatton.

Does anyone think Kostya Tszyu was a better win for Hatton than Mosley was for Cotto? Or is it that the cripple named Jose Luis Castillo at 140 is a more legitimate win than an always dangerous in the first 4 rounds Zab Judah?

Anyone who thinks that Cotto is not the obvious #1 choice for an opponent has lost their mind... seriously. The only argument I can see that makes some sense that does not favor the Cotto fight is a fight with Shane Mosley, and only under the pretense that it would be a tougher challenge, because that might be true. I'm still not buying it, but at least they have a somewhat defensible advocacy.
