Indeed Smoger is the best top ref in the world, he doesn't have too much of an ego that interrupts fighters momentum ala Joe Cortez, but has a kind of endeering persona in the ring.

All I ask of a referee is for them to do their job with minimal fuss and None of the "i'm firm, but i'm fair" bull**** for the cameras. Jay Nady pisses me off with his salute at the camera when hes announced. Well I got a message for this refs who enjoy the limelight: No one is there to see you, we don't care about who the **** you are.

Steve Smoger on the other hand does his job. I have heard critisism of him letting fights go for to long, but I don't see this. He just gives fighters every chance unlike refs in the UK who stop fights prematurely far too often. He is not a showbiz ref like others, and I salute him for this.

The thing with Smoger, if a guy gets hurt early in the fight, he will let them go to see if they can recover.

He is more cautious with fighters when they get hurt later in the fight and you can see how he may take an extra second to get a feeling for the fighters condition, which is exactly how it should be done.

It is tired fighters who suffer prolonged beatings that get ruined and killed in the ring.

that is absolutely the truth, and amazingly enough refs are less likely to call off fights when that is happening.

thanks for the info, that would be the best! hell, Cotto might need Smoger in a fight like that. It would be horribly if it got called off too early.

Smoger has sometimes stopped fights to late IMO. I can't remember exactly which as I write this, but if my memory serves me correctly the first Simon Brown vs. Tyrone Trice fight was one that went on way too long (14'th round I believe).
