I think as his fame and popularity as the top referee grows, so does his ego. Who is Joe "Fair but Firm" Cortez? When Richard Steele's ego became too big for his blue shirt to contain, his performance was compromised and so was his integrity.

While I don't question Cortez's integrity, I feel he is becoming over-officious and vocal for a referee. A ref's job is to maintain order, not maximize face time. If you're going to break the fighters, do so. But don't jump in and try to make yourself part of the fight.

He didnt do that bad but he could of done better and when that happens with a ref in 2 big fights ina row then you know hes on the downside i doubt he will get another big british vs america fight again especially if its gna be a ugly fight.
He warned but didnt take no points away at all bhop was a cheeky bastard doing sly things like headbutting him,low blowing him and punching him in his hips but the ref didnt see it so he deserves all the bad critisim he gets tbh.
This is just like what happened to richard steele after the chavez - taylor fight he didnt get much title fights after that.

What are you talking about did you not see Bowe vs Holyfield 1 & 3? or Johnson vs Ruiz? or Mayweather Jr vs Hatton? there are loads of fights in which Joe just ****ed up to me last night he finally did a good job.

No i haven't seen Bowe vs Holyfield 1 or 3 and i haven't seen Johnson vs Ruiz .. I know he was biased in the Hatton fight, which fights has he reffed since the Hatton fight?

I still feel Steve Smoger or Jay Nady are better referees. I also think Kenny Bayless is a very good up-and-coming referee.

He definitely enjoys being part of the show, but the problem is no one tunes in for him. I hear too much talking and action from him in the past couple of fights.

Hatton must have been screaming at the tv wondering why Cortez wouldnt let him hold and foul like he let Hopkins do.

I think he did alright. He wasn't perfect, but this was never going to be an easy fight for a referee.

I dont think he has done any big fights since the Hatton fight but I will be honest Cortez did a good job last night, what else were people hoping for a point deduction? or a DQ? Calzaghe was not fighting dirty and even though one shot did stray low a warning is the only thing called for there.
other than that I cant say foul play in regards to the fight, Hopkins lost because Hopkins didnt show up to fight he showed up to survive IMO.

I don't think he showed up to survive, he was just overly cautious and wanted to fight at a slow pace and Joe was never gonna let him do that, he landed some good counter punches though ...

That is what Im saying if he dont wont fighters holding then dont allow it in any fight!!! Its bull****, If Cortez Or "The Bum Bandit" didnt make such a big thing of it in the Hatton fight, And do mean he made a big thing of it, How comes he has now gone in a complete dif direction????? That is the only problem I had with him in this fight...But I think I rase a good point to be honest..Actions like this can spoil a fight..
