This happens all the time. The most exaggerated case I can remember recently was Floyd-Oscar. Due to all the media hype, more and more people believed Oscar would win and the odds kept increasing, by fight time they were almost even.
I think this tends to happen because promoters want to make the fans buy the fights, and they work hard on making the people believe that even mismatches are a lot more even than they appear to be. Since these people are master salesmen, the public gets fooled and actually buys into their bull****.
And the public getting fooled isn't just about their own ******ity. I fall into it all the time because I want to see a good fight.
