Cotto Smashes Gomez, Margarito Bashes Cintron

By Jake Donovan - The worst-case scenario going into this weekend’s HBO-televised main event was that it would quickly develop into a glorified sparring session.

Consider those fears realized, as Miguel Cotto had his way throughout before forcing former Contender contestant Alfonso Gomez to quit on his stool after five painfully one-sided rounds in Atlantic City.

It was this very Boardwalk Hall that played home to the biggest win of Gomez’ win, an upset ninth-round knockout of Arturo Gatti last summer. There would be no such Cinderella story on the strip Saturday night, as Gomez could never get going, suffering three knockdowns – the first three knockdowns of his career - and an enormous amount of punishment before suffering his first loss in over three years.

Round one began with Cotto landing a left hook upstairs, looking to initiate a fast-paced bout. Gomez remained poised, looking for counter opportunities, but was unmercifully beaten to the punch for his efforts. Cotto went to the body, landed upstairs, and even danced on his toes whenever he felt like playing defense. The round ended with Gomez on unsteady legs after taking a left hook to the body.

Cotto went right back to the body in round two, but was also effective with a purposeful jab that constantly kept Gomez well within the Puerto Rican’s desired punching range. Gomez sought any opening in attempting to transform into the spirited underdog that America fell in love with during his run on The Contender. It instead resulted in the bout’s first knockdown, with Gomez hitting the deck after a delayed reaction to a body shot. Gomez was once again wobbled at rounds end from a right hand upstairs. Cotto humiliated Gomez and smashed his ass into pieces, that was hilarious and a good fight, one sided beatings they ****ing rock.

Cintron and Margarito was a good fight too, good body shot by Big Tony.

Can't wait till these 2 get it on!!!

Did you forget he last lost to Williams who lost to Quintana who got blasted by Cotto? And that wasn't Margarito's 1st loss either.

Cintron was mentally beaten b4 stepping in the ring. Besides, I never thought he was a great champ. He struggled against limited opposition b4 the Margarito rematch.

              cotto !!!

Margarito vs COTTO will be a good fight, probably fight of the year. Cotto will pick apart margarito based on he leaves himself open and applying pressure to Cotto will get his ass knocked out. Cotto is no "cintron" his speed with power and dont forget boxing ability will get him the victory. A good fight but COTTO wins in the 9th round via KO!!

Antonio Diaz is the only one I've seen stand toe to toe with Margarito.

                You saw how that went.

Williams boxed him and knew not to stand toe to toe.

                Did i miss any?

I knew Cintron would be overconfident from beating Walter (Matthysse and Feliciano) He was pressed to redeem that KO

                Cotto doesn't want Margarito.

I'll say it once and come back when it's proven.

you just compared julio diaz and pwill to cotto.

thats like me comparing barbara streisand to lil wayne.

cotto does want margarito, as evidenced by their july fight ... hmmmm?

also as a correction to your post, williams did not box margarito, he stood there and fired off more shots than margarito - you've gotta move your legs when you box, cotto does that.

Jerry Quarry stopped Earnie Shavers in the first round. Earnie Shavers stopped Jimmy Ellis in the first round. By your logic Quarry should have absolutely anhiliated Ellis, right? Wrong, Ellis beats Quarry in a decision. I can give you a ton more examples to prove that the triangle theory doesn't work in boxing. Styles make fights and this one has all the makings for a very exciting one that could go either way.
