As already mentioned, it's not a very good idea to emulate him.

You need long, big arms that can cover most of your body and even then, you'd have to be prepared to take punishing shots to your arms, not to mention almost everytime an opponent hits you in the arms, your gloves bounce right into your face. Could really bust you up.

Winky just pulls his belt line up high, thats why it makes it seems like he can defend the whole front of his body with his arms, when in all actuality its also partly the belt line... although he does have a good reach.

Thats why when your guard is up, your gloves need to be actually touching your face so you dont get any bouncing... like when floyd puts his right hand up to guard.. he puts his glove right on the face... to act like a blocking cushion almost...

otherwise yes, you will get beat up with your own gloves... kinda like jones did in the first tarver fight

Yeah, takes a lot of practice to not get sloppy though.

He perfected it over years of training/fighting. Plus his natural reflexes/ability is a big part of it.

The thing about Winky is he makes it look so easy when in reality its one of the hardest styles to emulate. Having freakishly long arms helps him out a lot though.

I suggest exploring your own defensive style.

Im not trying to make you feel dumb or anything (because you're not) but too often in life (not just boxing or sports in general...but anything) people admire someone for something and they are in the same line of work and try to (in essence) "copy" the people or person they admire and it never really works.

                    how do i know?

                    well theres only ONE Roy Jones Jr. only ONE Ali, only ONE babe ruth, only ONE Michael Jordan; only ONE Tiger Woods; only ONE 2pac, only ONE Jimi Hendrix; etc. etc; etc;

and there for sure is only ONE winky wright.

greatness doesnt come from copying a formula...

greatness comes with hard work from within yourself.

When developing a style its best to make that style the most natural to you instead of going off of what you see a great person do.

thats my advice; do whats most natural for you and be the best you can at it.

but to answer your question winky's defense looks good for judges but he does take a good beating.

Winky wright has unusually long forearms which is needed for his style.

so unless your reach and reflexes are that of winky wrights then i dont think its going to work for you as well as it does him.

If you are a sucker for punishment, go ahead.

I do that **** against people who are taller and better skilled. Sooner or later, they'll give up, thinking they can't get to you.
But in fact, they very much do.
You need big balls, and I cannot lie.
