LUIS COLLAZO IS ONE FIGHT AWAY FROM BEING #1, THEN DEMANDS COTTO.
By Darren Nichols
"I’d like to fight Cotto to show the Puerto Rican people in New York and at home who the real Puerto Rican champ is."
**********: What’s the latest and greatest with Luis Collazo?
Luis Collazo: Right now we’re looking to fight next for the #1 spot for the WBA. #1 is not rated, so I’m number #2. Nelson Linares from Venezuela is rated #3 in the WBA, and are looking to fight for the #1 spot.
**********: Last January, you shutout Edvan Barros over ten rounds. What do you feel this fight did for you and your career?
Luis Collazo: It got me back after the surgery I had. It was a tough fight. Barros wasn’t coming to lay down, and I did my job. I felt great, and it’s time to step it up.
**********: For those who may not know, what are the details of the surgery you recently had?
Luis Collazo: When I fought Sugar Shane Mosley, I broke my thumb and tore my ligaments in the second round. I threw the left in the second round, and I heard a pop.
**********: When is the fight with Linares for the WBA #1 spot scheduled to take place?
Luis Collazo: Hopefully at the end of June. I’m in training camp with Paul Williams getting him ready for the Quintana rematch, and he’s getting me ready for Linares, who is another tall southpaw like Williams.
**********: After facing names like Mosley and Hatton, do you feel your experience will begin to play a major part in your fights?
Luis Collazo: Definitely. I’m still young, and the Hatton fight was a big step up. I felt that I stepped up to the plate and gave a great performance. I had four weeks notice with Shane, and I fought with a hurt hand, but I did the best I could.
**********: What do you feel will be the biggest advantage you will have over your next opponent?
Luis Collazo: My ring experience and the type of fighters I’ve face already.
**********: How does the remainder of 2008 look for Luis Collazo?
Luis Collazo: Oh man. Hopefully I get the #1 spot and get the mandatory with the WBA. Then, I’d like to fight Cotto to show the Puerto Rican people in New York and at home, who the real Puerto Rican champ is.
**********: Do you still feel you can fight at your best at 147?
Luis Collazo: I’ve been a welterweight since I was 15 years old, and I have no problems making weight now.
**********: Any closing thoughts?
Luis Collazo: To everybody on **********, and to my fans and critics, I’ll be back soon and I’ll make some noise.
