Any non-Mexicans think Gomez is going to win?

Just so you all know. I'm Mexican. It shouldn't matter, but I'm talking about my own people here when I say that it seems to me that only ultra nationalistic Mexicans think Gomez has a real shot.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I really feel like the only reason Top Rank and HBO are getting away with this card is because we Mexicans have too much pride to admit that our guy is outgunned.

There's also the fans from the Contender and so forth. I'm not Mexican and like Gomez(and Cotto for the record, but I like Gomez more), and hope he can pull it off, though realistically I'd say his odds are very slim. However, he does bring some things to the table that give me some hope. He doesn't have much power, but he's a very high volume combination puncher, and Cotto hasn't faced many of those. He also goes to the body very well/often, and Cotto hasn't experienced a ton of that either. And he's been in against bigger guys and was able to win or last the distance swinging even when he got beat, so he's pretty tough. He does nothing outstanding, but pretty good all-around skills, and is a very fundamentally sound fighter. I don't think he's bigger than Cotto but he is taller and longer, with a pretty solid jab game, which again, I don't think Cotto has faced many good jabbers. Lastly, Cotto is slightly injured and he might underestimate Gomez, as he has not always gotten "up" for smaller matches.

All that said, it's a lot of hope and maybes. Regardless of the outcome though, Gomez vs Cotto will be an all-action fight for as long as it lasts, so it should be pretty entertaining.

I think Gomez has a shot. I bet on it.

I know Cotto pretty well.. Cotto doesn't like guys like Gomez. Cotto hasn't had to face very many, if any, like Gomez spiritually. It's very important to the psychology of men like Miguel Cotto that their adversaries fold up on them. Gomez is not likely to fold up. Not without a fight.

Cotto is in his comfort zone with opponents who are mentally weak. Cotto doesnt like to be contested, he likes to be delivering beatdowns. If he can't beat down Gomez, he's going to be having some problems.

So yep, there's an actual basis for picking against Cotto. One of the primary reasons Cotto is easy to hurt physically; is mental. Just ask guys like Jake LaMotta about that sort of thing.. Chin problems aren't just physiological or biochemical. They're mental as well. Long before Jack Mosley implored his son Shane to finally jump on Cotto during the interval between the 8th and 9th round of their fight - there were people in the community that knew Cotto's Achilles heel was pressure.. Some of them members of this forum.

I think Miguel has an improved response for it now; he spurts back. But he's still vulnerable to pressure. He don't like it.

Finally someone who agrees with me on the chin thing!

And to all you children, there is always a factor infinite & unknow.

That means that there is always this hidden factor that you don't know about, or can imagine how it will play out.

Mosley would have defeated Cotto if he had come into the fight with the right attitude. No doubt in my mind.
Gomez comes in without any attitude. He's just there to kill
That alone is a factor big enough to consider it plausible that he can win.

Along with most people, I too had the feeling that Gomez was a chewing gum in the making.
However, he's got that little glint in his eye... The passion, the drive, the motivational factor.
If he holds up mentally, he's got a genuine shot, but not before he has endured a little pain

I'd like to see how big Gomez is before picking him.

Reading Addisons post I'm won over somewhat.

            I love an underdog.

You won't hear any clever argument in support of Alfonso Gomez. No discussions about how he beat the bigger so-and-so, or the more talented so-and-so.. Everything he's accomplished to this point is meaningless, if he's accomplished anything at all. In this sport the fans think you're a festering pile of **** until you can break through.. Break through, then you're Jesus..

Repost, but this is a good show for those who can catch it again..

Gomez has absolutely no shot... none whatsoever.
