I won't try and be a smartass about this but I'm looking forward to any form of written explanation as to why Calzaghe has better footwork. From the waist up Calzaghe is one of the best practicioners in the sport. And while his feet are fleet, his footwork is not the best. Certainly no match for the footwork of Bernard Hopkins. NONE.
A large part of what makes Hopkins appear to be all the things he is good is his exceptional footwork and feet placement. He's all legs. Joe Calzaghe is all bending at the waist. Joe's natural Boxing skill and fast moving/rotating torso covers all his footwork mistakes. Joe Calzaghe's legs have betrayed him on many occasion, putting him out of position and in the line of fire. This is one of the reasons Hopkins has a chance to begin with.
Paramount.
No argument can be made for Calzaghe having better footwork.
My basis? I will check both fighter's astrological signs and their horoscopes every day in the week or so leading up to the fight. I will then consult three psychics. I will then read all the relevant boxing sites analysis and predictions. Then I will conduct a scientfic ene.. eme.. miney... mo... however, none of mother's toes shall be caught.

Winner: Bernard Hopkins
its eenie meanie miney.. but.. I flipped a coin.. and it landed on tails for Calzaghe.. I guess that means we're looking at a draw.
fans need to realize that Calzaghe needs to be perfect on his feet to beat Hopkins.
Because every single time Calzaghe will be in a position to throw punches, Bernard will not move backwards like everyone else.
He will move straight forward, butting and clinching, using shoulders and weight on Joe.
This will take a heavy toll on both Calzaghe's mental game and his physical state.
Very good point not often made. This could definitely catch out Calzaghe if he's not prepared for it, or doesn't adjust.
1) he's from the hood
2) he went to jail
3) he's already in Calzaghe's head
Those aren't overally logical factors, Hopkins rants about himself, moans about the cold (the lack of reslience unheard of in Calzaghe's hood). Plus he's not in Calzaghe's head, any remark has been taken calmly with a smirk and milder comment.
I think Calzaghe's footwork might not be quite as good, but it's far easier to make, and spot footwork mistakes when your moving your feet so much more. Hopkins has to choose his footwork more carefully and slowly, leaving less room for a wrong step. He's moving his feet slower than Calzaghe esp later on though, hence imo they're pretty close in this department.
Intelligence, again I think they possess different kinds of intelligence making this also tight to compare. Hopkins to me has a more distanced view of how hes going to rough his opponent up and get to them, with his resilience, toughness, and roughness. Calzaghe on the other hand possesses the intelligence of adapting, reading his opponent, more imo. So again, very tight in this department.
Honestly, if Calzaghe gets flustered and stars winging punches like he sometimes does I can see Hopkins using that head down, leaning forward, wide hook of his own. The type that hurt Tarver if I remember correctly. Where he doesn't even look, he throws that crusty noggin forward and wings one out there over an opponent's punch. Cal can't be as free with his angles as usual with Bernard. He needs to pick his shots a little more than he has at times in the past.
