Where have I heard this before? Oh, I know, I said more or less exactly the same things you are saying about Cotto in a post about Floyd/ Hatton here:
The thing is, I was wrong, and I wasn't the only one. And in this case, I think you are wrong too.
Miguel Cotto is a tailor made Floyd opponent for exactly the reasons you think he will beat him. Just like Hatton, he constantly comes forward, only he's not as quick on his feet as the Hitman, so he won't be able to fluster Floyd like Hatton did early on. Floyd will know everything he is going to do before he does it. Which will be jab, jab, jab, in the hope of working his way in to land some more damaging shots.
What's that i hear you say? Oscar de la Hoya had some success against Floyd using his jab? And Cotto uses his more consistently? Thats right! But wait, wasn't the success of Oscars jab primarily based on his height and reach advantages over Floyd, attributes Cotto does not posses to anything like the same degree? It certainly looks that way to me. Miguel Cotto's jab will be far less effective than Oscar's, so he will be even less able to get close and do some damage than Oscar was, and since Cotto doesn't match Oscar for power...
The reality is this. In a fight with Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto will suffer exactly the same fate as any of the other recent opponents who ever posed an even faintly realistic threat to Floyd. He will find himself unable to get anywhere near Mayweather for the vast majority of the fight, land little, while simultaneously eating right hand pot-shots all night long. He won't get KOd like Hatton did, but thats about the best that can be said.
The simple truth is that so far in his career, success against Floyd Mayweather has been measured in the ability not to get close to beating him, but in fact, to cause him any trouble at all. See the early rounds v Hatton, Oscars fabled jab, Castillo's 'pressure' etc etc. Nice as it would be to see Floyd challenged, or even just see him fight at welterweight, Miguel Cotto is not going to be the man to break that trend. And until Floyd either gets old and slow, or moves up to like 160, no-one else is going to be either.
