Honestly, when a fight is like this one- where we know one fighter needs to work on the inside to have success, the referee needs to not break apart clinches unless there is no work being done. If the boxers are in a clinch, or inside, but are throwing- and work out in a timely manner- there is no reason to step in every single time they clinch. Now, the question will be if Calzaghe can tie up Bernard effectivley on the inside- or even vice versa. If one guy decides they don't want to work on the inside, or they don't want to let the other guy work- and can tie up their arms or get them in some sort of head lock- well, then, fans need to realize that, if Cortez steps in at that point, he's doing his job.

How should Cortez ref Hopkins-Calzaghe??

The problem with Hatton-Mayweather was not that he broke them up too quickly, it's that he consistently protected Mayweather and did not treat the fighters equally. He even cautioned Hatton when May fouled, and deducted a point from Hatton when May willingly turned his back
So no he should not use that as his model.
