Vitali was clearly winning the fight at the time of the controversial stoppage, he hurt Lewis badly several times and made him stagger like a drunk...Vitali embarrased Lewis with ONE ****ING EYE...Lewis was dead after the 6th round, Vitali was about to put him away.

Lewis PROMISED Vitali a rematch if he got by Kirk Johnson....Vitali destroyed Johnson in 2 rounds!!....Lewis was then offered well over 20 million dollars for a rematch with Vitali....what does Lewis do??....He cowardly turns down the mega payday and retires like a ***** because he is scared of Vitali and he knew he would get his ass KO'd in the rematch...VITALI RETIRED LEWIS

Vitali retired Lewis by losing to Lewis??? That sounds right. Also, if Vitali atleast had a knockdown in the fight you could argue the point more clearly. But Vitali never knocked him down, even Lennox said that his punched never hurt. No knows if that's true only Lewis but what we do know is that Lennox had a good chin in that fight and stayed like a true HW Champ that he was. All that talk bout he ran away from Vitali, it's his decision as champ to chose who he wants and not wants to fight. You can call him a coward for turning away but I can tell you that 9/10 people would do the same in his position. Mayweather is a prime example of that. How does not fighting someone you beat make you any less of a Champion that fighting him does.

Lewis was losing but the original poster is right, he wasn't being dominated. He managed to land some murderous shots on Klitschko even though he was getting fatigued, both of them were getting very tired.

People should look at the photo's from that night of Vitali's eye and you'll see his eye. Im not saying Vitali wasn't winning the fight, he was, but he couldn't defend himself enough to stop the punches comming from Lennox.

That night we saw one fighters heart and it wasn't lennox's heart that night. Vitali was standing up pissed when it was stopped, Lennox Lewis nearly passed out on the stool after the stoppage... Lennox's legs were giving obviously when he had to fall to the stool the way he did. People know in a rematch vitali would have beaten lennox, thats why lennox did not take the rematch which would have probably been one of the biggest heavy weight pay days ever in the history of this sport.

if it hadnt been for the heavyweight championship and such a damn good fight it would have been stopped two rounds earlier.... than being said they may as well have let it go one more.. it was obvious something was going to give very soon.

Lewis showed heart by staying up while getting hit with some very powerful punches, you saying he displayed no heart is not true.

He didn't take the rematch because he is a smart man, he knew he was past it.

The only one who agree's with me on this point. It's true, people say Vitali got screwed and the fight should'nnt have been stopped, but it was stopped and Vitali's retired after he couldn't face Rahman for the HW belt because of a 4 month injury, but while in retirement he said he would ONLY return if Lennox returned. Lennox never returned but Vitali did so it shows that Vitali wasn't true to his word, and is in this because of the business, not that there's something wrong with it cause everyones trying to get a fair share of the money but he didn't stick with what he said.

Yeah and everyone forgets how good a fight it was lol.

Well I mean there were clinchy moments but it was one of the better HW fights we saw around that time no? haha well I'm pretty sure of that.
