What Has Calzaghe Done to be Considered Great?
Collapse
-
Joe Calzaghe is who he is: An extremely gifted fighter who remains undefeated through twenty-something title defenses. He has faced both good and bad competition and has looked impressive if not legendary against both.
What Joe Calzaghe is not is a fighter who has made big fights happen against the world's best. He has not fought the biggest names or taken the toughest challenges. He has never made a sacrifice to make a big fight. He has never moved an ounce off of 168 or travelled outside of the UK (sans one fight against Mario Veit in Germany, which was part of an agreement in which Calzaghe was allowed a fight in the UK).
In boxing we have no Super Bowl. The competition and the career that results from it is largely up to the boxer himself. Calzaghe has fought capable fighters. He has not fought extraordinary ones.

Originally posted by FRKO View PostAccording to Frank Warren, they attempted to get the fight with Roy made. Twice, actually. I have a TV documentary from a couple of years back. So basically Warren went on camera to reveal this info. I don't know the details as to why Roy never took a fight with Joe.
