Ooh, missed your earlier post there Rki.

I've lived in London all my life, but I'm half Welsh. You could hardly tell really but I'm proud of it. I like many people, consider myself British. If you came across some English making such comments on Calzaghe, all I'd say is it's a shame, but don't let SOME, shape your whole view.

All my friends and family regardless of they're blood, consider themselves British, and never made or would make such comments about Calzaghe. So reign in the anti English sentiments please. They're out of line, broad and not representative of the majority.

To take below 1% of the English you've come across, and judge that as all of it's people, and it's boxers like Woods, is what's actually ******.


So too is 'No wonder the English are viewed as ****** in the states', that's your ignorant view, not the countries. It's such ignorant offensive comments that lead some British, and some in the world, to the view Americans as some of the most ignorant. Most realise it's people like you ruining it for the majority though, and don't tarr an entire country of whom you don't know.

On HBO, and whatever channel you limies watched it on, Calzaghe came out to the Welsh national anthem and flags v Hopkins. He doesn't represent the UK or he would have had that flag and anthem before the fight. You losers saying America lost are **** riding a boxer that is not yours. The last fighters you english jokes sent over, Hatton, Woods, got beaten like the frauds they are. Calzaghe represents Wales, and has nothing to do with you crowning about beating America, The english are still bums. Haye is the next fraud to be exposed in America.

You are obviously struggling to understand this but it cannot be put any simpler: Wales is a part of the UK.

The truth about Britishness, Welshness etc etc is this.

Wales, Scotland and England go together to make up Britain. Add Northern Ireland to that list and you have the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is the 'official' country. Technically Wales, Scotland and England are not countries at all, they are provinces of the United Kingdom, with britain being the term applied to the countries on the UK mainland i.e. not including Northern Ireland. World historically each of these provinces WAS an individual country, and to all intents and purposes that is how they continue to be perceived by their residents.

By and large most people in this group of countries define themselves as British, which is a shorthand term for saying that you come from the UK. For the most part this means that we support sportsmen from any of the 'countries' in the UK. Some individuals have a stronger nationalistic feeling towards being English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish and this is the type of person who will tell you that Calzaghe is Welsh not English, but in general if you are from England, Scotland or Wales you are considered to represent Britain.

For US readers, the best way to think of the UK is like a mini United States, with England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland being our 'states'. It is not exactly the same as each of these places considers itself a distinct country, even if technically it isn't. Think of Texas and its self definition as an independent 'lone star state' and you'll be halfway there.
