this is terrible for both fighters, i don't care what anyone says who this favors, it doesn't favor either fighter, cortez has proved to be getting worse and has been making himself to involved with stopping the action when he should be letting the inside fighting go on.

from the release, calzaghe seems to be very happy with having cortez as a ref, but what i don't get, is that, after watching cortez with hatton vs mayweather, how could anyone be happy having cortez as the ref????

they should have Steve Smoger, or kenny Bayless, or Toney Weeks ref this fight.

cortez had more interference in the hatton vs mayweather fight then jay nady has in any of his fights, or eddie cotton when he reffed ndou vs malignaggi ( which was one of the worst ref jobs ever preformed, EVER!, next to cortez for hatton vs mayweather)

this is ****ty guys, through and through, for both sides, it favors no one and is more of a liability for the fight as a whole.

all of us fans just got a slap in the face with this one, **** this sucks..........

People tend to exagrate about Mayweather-Hatton. He did a eh job, but not the masacare people seem to be making it out to be.

He was warning Mayweather for things (I remember Cortez slapping Mayweather's elbows to have him not use.

The only thing he did really bad was in round 2 where he kept interferring with the action and called timeouts. That was really annoying. You could argue about the point deduction, but Hatton clearly went for the foul even if it didn't connect.

He would let Hatton attack the body or whatever when holding, he just wouldn't let him hit low or in the back or illegal stuff like that. He gave both of them a fair chance. That being said, it didn't even matter as Ricky got TKOed anyway.

If Steve Smoger were the ref for this fight wed have a hell of a fight, with Cortez and Hopkins safety first style to begin with i think were in for a rather boring fight.

Seeing how much heat he got for not allowing Ricky to "roughhouse", do he think Cortez allows more of it this fight, since i guess thats what a lot of yall wanted to see? A lot of people were complaining that Cortez didnt let them fight, now if he does this fight, are yall going to complain too???

**** yeah anything goes wit Smoger as the ref. It's too bad he ain't got this assignment. Everybody makes too big a deal outta Cortez' actions in Hatton-PBF but he is a little too firm like he says with that phrase of his.

I don't know if he will know. I have the Allen-Hopkins fight somewhere and I remember it as being the dullest "fight" ever. More like a Graeco-Roman wrestling match. I didn't notice Hopkins being warned for butting, nor holding and hitting low etc. But Allen was, all the time . This was even the 3rd time they'd fought, and there was no reason for it, like many of Hopkins' fights. Allen was a worn-out 36, had 5 losses of which 4 were KO's, so obviously there wouldn't be any sort of a well-matched fight, even if Hopkins wasn't first cousin to Captain Nemo's Octopus.

Joe Cortez seemed to be more concerned with making sure that his "ring dancing" was done with "flair" and noticed by the crowd. He gets such a build-up that you expect something............ He has "STYLE".

Calzaghe probably means that since Cortez breaks fighters when they are still punching and before they hold or clinch, that this will be an advantage for him. Well, i think it'll only make sure that there's more movement, both from the fighters and from the ref, all revolving around each other with Cortez artistically flapping his arms, conducting his orchestra. I just don't know why Cortez hasn't been "accidentally" flattened by a frustrated boxer, of whom, when Cortez is the ref, there are usually 2. (like Vinny Pazienza did one time)

AND, it means that whatever dirty stuff that's done, will be done by Hopkins first, and then they'll be broken before Calzaghe can reciprocate, which, you may know, he's well able to do.

I just hope it turns out to be a good fight, but I don't expect it. Hopkins, in my opinion was much better, and interesting to watch, quite a TIGER, BEFORE he fought Roy Jones, with whom he didn't do badly at all, considering that Jones had won almost every round he'd fought until Hopkins, who won thc most-4. Since then until Trinidad, he wasn't worth watching. And since Trinidad, we keep holding our breath, listening to his haranguing, expecting fireworks each fight. All we get is very expensive "damp squib fizzle". Not much for all the millions he's made since Trinidad. He was much better before when he was making hardly anything. I suppose the heavy task of counting and worrying about the safety of money dims one's vigour.

CLINCHING is NOT against the rules, it's part of the skill and science of self defence and aids infighting, which is an art in itself, to get on the iINSIDE. Meaning that you manoeuvre and snuggle, and struggle, to get YOUR arms INSIDE the other guys, so that you have his open body to hit, and he only has the backs of your arms and shoulders.

However it must be separated from holding-and hitting. THIS is what Hopkins excels at and it's illegal, especially when initiated or accompanied by a solid headbutt. That's what experts probably mean when they say that Hopkins always uses his head. They mean he's being dirty not clever, although he's both.

Mayweather excels at using his elbow to dot you on the jaw, or force the point into your chest or face.

The two worst ref jobs I've seen recently were the Emanuel Augustus-Burton fight, and the Wladimir Klitschko-Sam Peter fight. Neumann must be as blind as a bat in sunlight, and the other guy was just completely incompetent.
