I agree on before WW2. Thing is, they still had pretty good defense, even before WW2.

what's old school about it? ill tell you, it's toughness. you talk about how old school cats out there came out to fight consistently during the year, prolonging their records and i agree, and they were tough sob's. excitement is watching an action packed fight, while eating a sandwich and having a cold beer, and all that. watching a fighter take a beating in a single round in one of the most "exciting" fights, and having another point taking away, with all the odds stacked aginst him, and knocking out his opponent has a little more to do with magic, and seeing a special fighter. and then excitement usually ranks after those 2, because it just regesters to you, what you have just witnessed. this generation of fighters doesnt breed toughness like that, they only come in a blue moon, and fight back whenever it's convinient to them.

and that's what old school is all about. and before you mentioned anything about the comment you touched upon defence which tells that you're a little skeptical of punchers, which is okay. that's just your taste.

30 fights a year? Maybe Henry Armstrong in 1937 when he was coming up. You'd be hard-pressed to find any other name boxers going at that rate, not even Pep (who had some 20+ years early in his career). Not that 20 isn't brutal enough.

Anyone else still get a bit teary eyed watching Old Corrales fights?
Diego Corrales made me a fan when i seen him fight castillo for the first time...

i had interest in him as a fighter (always had tons of heart) but that fight brought him to a higher level.

i think there are 3 fights in his career; well three moments in three fights in his career that define him as a warrior (and he lost 2 of the 3 im talking about).

                1. His first fight with castillo (if that doesnt show courage and heart to the fullest extent of the word i dont know what does). just watch the fight and when the 10th round rolls around be impressed and amazed by his heart.

                2. His stoppage loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. yes he lost but he got up after each of the 5 knockdowns and showed no sign of quit. his corner had to stop the fight and he actually go angry with his corner for stopping it. thats heart...i mean anyone watching that fight knew that unless he knocked mayweather out (which given his ability...makes it highly unlikely) he was going to lose a HUGE UD. but he still wanted to fight...thats heart...most boxers would have probably felt embarrased by being knocked down 5 times...but he kept on and you have to love his will in that fight...

                3. His stoppage loss to casamayor...he basically begged and pleaded with the ref to allow the fight to go on...he was a warrior...plain and simple.

when i see those 3 moments in his career i am man enough to admit my eyes tear up...

great fighter/warrior and an even better person (listen him in his post fight interview for his first castillo fight)...the man pulls off a HUGE comeback win and wants to talk about cancer awareness rather than just bask in his own glory...all eyes were on him and he used it for a really positive thing.

                thats a good person there...

there will never be another Corrales...but he gave us GREAT moments and GREAT fights in his career...

                  Chico will be missed forever.

BoxingScene had his pic with the other 4 ****s to show him respect, it only lasted for a few months, they couldn't even keep his pic for one year. They had that overrated Gatti for over 3 years without dieing.

beautiful words. But they show you have an idealized view of the “old school” of boxing. Go get informed is all I can say.

And yes old school fighters had better defense than today, if Corrales grew up as a fighter in the 40s he would not have looked like an amateur in the face of Mayweather's tricks.
