As this build-up goes on, one can anticipate a "swan song" performance, (with the swan already drooping before the denouement) even more dreary than his last umpteen fights, not to mention all those forgettable performances before Trinidad made him famous. Until then, he was almost unheard of other than by Max Kellerman, who alone kept his name and expertise alive. I think Max was the only one on TV, who, when a top middleweight fight would be discussed, would say," but he'll have to go through Bernard Hopkins to become the REAL Champ".

Until I heard Max talk about him, I'd almost never heard of him, and then, not in complimentary terms. Well he's up against it now with Calzaghe, and he'll either shuffle and poise and calculate and move around, OR he'll try to make a fight out of it. Personally I think his only chance is Joe falls and breaks his leg, or that Hopkins gets in a few successful butts before the ref is FORCED to call him on it. He could BITE him. I suppose I just don't like Hopkins.

Anyway, Hopkins HAS to keep being as outrageous as he can, just to make the fight seem interesting, since he's NEVER filled any seats. It was always his opponent, and since there doesn't seem to be much he can do in the Golden Boy Organisation, I wouldn't think his compensation is all that great. He wants to retire with a satisfactory cash cushion. Who can blame him? Not ME. Professional boxing is not REALLY a Sport. Sport was practiced for the honour and thrill of competing, ans striving to win. It became a business when it was found that people would pay to view it. It's a BUSINESS. The business of supplying spectacle and thrills for vicarious viewers.
Oh boy, another internet hero who's smarter then the rest of us. Key points of this post? Hopkins is a bad promoter who somehow was selected to become the vice president of the biggest and fastes growing promotional company in boxing. He has no fans, he can't fight, Calzaghe is great and his career epitomizes what a boxing career should be, and boxing is the only "sport" that competes for money? WTF? That's real cute, Let's touch on "not to mention all those forgettable performances" that Joe's entire career is relegated to and built on.

I know, his fans should have higher standards and refuse to be fooled by WBOgus title defenses and HUGE tests against 43 year old men.

What's your problem, his post was entirely valid, Hopkins recent style is NOt a pleasing one to most people. Not many people would go to see him fight even if they were fans, ODLH and Trinidad filled the seats not him is those fights.
He was actually stating that he was a decent promotor seeing as the the only way he can gain interest in a fight with his style is to trash talk. Peopl want to see him get beat because of what he says, they are sorely let down. Hopkins is a brilliant fighter, i don't like him but i can admit that much. At this stage in his career though i think Calzaghe will walk through him. In his prime I think it would've been one of the best fights out there.
I personally and you can check my previous posts didn't like Calzaghe at all, I picked both Kessler and Lacy to beat him. He turned me. He proved me very wrong on both accounts. I said if he beats Kessler and does it convincingly I will become a Calzaghe fan and lo and behold, I'm keeping my word.

THANK YOU INDEED RYNO113 -I was beginning to feel a little battered by all those crushing left jabs which XFiles was throwing at me-not to mention the right-crosses and left hooks, and you've thrown a little common-sense on the fire. The choice of the name XFiles is enough to show where he gets his imagination from. I have a daughter who absolutely LOVES Xfiles. she's 26 (going on 14). Mind you, if we ignore the errors and contradictions and slip-ups, some of the episodes weren't bad.

All the same XFiles was educational. I had no idea that Hopkins had been specially selected as "vice-president". I recall it was written as "vice-president in charge of East Coast operations", but I don't recall reading about any "surgery" in the East Coast, performed by Hopkins. Since I've never read ANY of his vice-presidential pronouncements from nor about the East Coast, nor anything else to do with the actual internal workings of Golden Boy, I must plead ignorance as my excuse. In fact I don't even know how many "vice_presidents" they have, nor how many more will be or have been added (or subtracted) as the need arises. Nor even the relative importance or unimportance of the position. I've even read that Barrera said his position as Mexican ""vice-president" was either closed up, or on the verge. It's a reasonable bet that Ricky Hatton may even be offered the title of "vice-president" for England, maybe even throwing in Ireland too. if the OIRISH don't object too much.

They'll keep Wales for Calzaghe, for sure, and we'll have the picture of the two ferocious rivals smiling at each other and sitting at a board-room working table together, exchanging learned opinions on whom to pick for the next "blockbuster" promotion. YEAH!!!

I DO know that Oscar is the KINGPIN, and chief figurehead, and that SCHAFFER (is that his name?) does all the actual work of running of the Company.

Call it what you want. Hopkins calls it $250,000 just to show up at a fight. So what are you getting to shoot your fat mouth off on the internet about bull****?

If he gets it-good luck to him, whose word are you taking that he DOES get it?? Seems like throwing away money and I'm not sure if I'd believe everything I hear, or read. Of course you are not me. I like to check my facts several different ways. But if he does, it's absolutely tearing up money- paid for by poor boxing fans and not whoever the guilty party is.

As for what I get, I've long ago got my get, and I'm more than satisfied with it and need to say no more about it. And, showing I have only good feeling towards you let me say- may you be as fortunate.

Ed, thanks for making some intelligent posts. It's refreshing to read these among the usual immature boxing forum garbage. By the way, I gave you an "excellent" rating. Not sure who voted you down to two stars but you didn't deserve it, in my opinion. Cheers.

FRKO- Thank you very much. I appreciate your little note all the more since that effing XFOOLS seems to be hounding me. I have no idea why,-unless he resents intelligence which he'd like to have himself.

I've watched Hopkins for years and years on TV, and wouldn't pay 10 cents to go across the steet to actually see him. The considerable skill he has is more than taken away by his nasty mouth, for me anyway, and head butts leave me cold. I've been brought up to regard boxing as a sport, for sportsmen, but today it's just a big money business, and a boastful or foul mouth almost seem obligatory.

I actually prefer skilful, scientific boxing, a guy with full of skill but with no punch, who has to use his wits and reflexes to keep out of mischief, and fool the other guy into making errors. Like Emanuel Augustus. Malinaggi, for instance isn't bad, but he's been taking too much punishment in his last few fights. I don't think he's recovered from the Cotto fight. Zaheer Rahim for another. Although he fought a stinker against Freitas, he definitely beat Rocky Juarez and was robbed by the ref, which affected his career from then on. I like Roy Jones who can (or once could) do things in the ring I've never seen before, and has a 1 punch KO.

Mtr XFILES, take a deep breath.....hold it......hold it.....hold it....hold it ....hold it....hold it.....hold it.....hold it......now collapse into that bath full of water head under and stay that way for the next hour.
