Coach used to tell some of the young guys prior to fights / tournaments a story about Lawrence Taylor. The night before the '86 super bowl Taylor hired some **********s to go party with Sammy Winder and Gene Lang(from the Broncos). Their performances were dismal, 8 rushes for 30 yards from Winder and 5 for 38 from Lang. They complained on the sidelines of fatigue as early as the 2nd quarter. At 27 years old in the physical primes of their lives they should've been wild rampaging beasts on the field, but instead performed like tamed ponies. Maybe it was coincidence, maybe not, a similar story about Cornellius Bennet from the Bills also has the simlarity of too much partying with women the night before two super bowls where he had terrible performances.
The sporting comparison is that getting off close to major competition has never been beneficial and the only stories about it are how it hampers performance. I've yet to ever hear about a major sports figure crediting his finest hour to getting off the night before.Comment
