When a fighter spits out his mouthpiece following a knockdown

In both the Pavlik-Miranda fight and Corrales-Castillo I a fighter spat out his mouthpiece after being knocked down and the referee was criticised by the commentators for getting it washed and put back in by the corner.

I thought that's what the referee is supposed to do? If so why the criticism?

I thought the criticism was just because it was a bit cheap.

It's probably because the commentators feel that it gives the hurt fighter time to recover, but it is what the referee is supposed to do and worked great for Corrales against Castillo.

Well they might not be trying to be cheap..

When you try to breathe heavily with your mouth open after being knocked down, trying to regain strength must be hard..

I cvpuld see it falling out...

        AND of course wash it....
blood on the ring mat and the bottom of the shoes mixed with sweat and small skin particles.. Of course wash it off I'd say.

Corrales was knocked out without that extra time to recover. Kayoed. Out cold. Spitting out the mouthpiece was cheating and Diego should have been counted out.
