I mean... not even the mexican featherweights of the 70s managed to be shot by 25, and they must have been the shortest-lived crop of fighters we had since after the war.

Different fighters take punishment differently. Some guys are punchy after 10 amateur fights. It doesn't matter how good your defense is, you still take ALOT of punishment.
Lets take Floyd for example. He only gets hit by 18% of his opponents punches. If they average 500 punches thrown a fight, that is still 90 punches a fight. 90* 30 fights = 2700 punches to the head, plus sparring. Generally you spar atleast 7 rounds for every round of a fight. so lets take that 2700 punch number and multiply it by 7 for the punishment taken sparing. That is a total of 21,600 punches that Floyd would have taken over just 30 fights.
Now, considering that every fighter takes punishment differently, the fact that Benitez ended up with brain damage is not surprising. Getting punched in the head is not conducive to brain healthComment

Benitez fell into the trappings of success. Women, partying, that was the life for him. He had success too soon and didn't know how to handle it. His overbearing father didn't help much. Benitez is the classic case of a guy who has too much "father" in his career, like Zab Judah. Once the dedication is gone, it's usually gone for good.I can see your (and run's) point, in terms of achievements and in particular “numbers”. I am thinking more in terms of matchups (p4p obviously), and when you have great fighter vs great fighter, questions arise, and the winner is usually the fighter with answers. and answers have been Tito biggest problem.
God only knows what a disciplined Benitez could have been. His career was basically over at 25 and he had already been a 3 division champion by then.
There is no doubt about it to me, Benitez would've had Tito's number. Beyond a reasonable doubt, Benitez's style would have been hell for Tito. But we're going on accomplishments and Tito just commanded the greater aura.Comment

List one win legitimate win in titos career that is as good as Carlos Palomino or Antonio Cervantes, much less Roberto Duran.Benitez fell into the trappings of success. How about the 3 round annihilation of Yory Boy Campas? If I remember right it was 1994, Tito's 23rd or 24th fight and Campas was 54-0 w/ 42 KOS, (someone correct the numbers if needed).Comment

You're saying Tito's win over Yory Boy Campas was more impressive than Benitez' win over Cervantes, Duran or Palomino?Comment

1) Punches in sparring are more often than not different than punches in fights.Different fighters take punishment differently. Some guys are punchy after 10 amateur fights. It doesn't matter how good your defense is, you still take ALOT of punishment.

2) You wear headgear in sparring.
If you want to think that Benitez was more prone to brain damage than 99% of the top pros, fine.
I will go with the notion of him being closer to the average with that respect and that he did not train properly, which is backed up by everyone who said something about his training.Comment
