When I was a young amatuer a man named Greg Rice showed up at the gym and took me under his wing. This man was a great instructer of the outside game of boxing. Employing the jab was a trademark for him. He got me working on the outside controlling the guys in my fights with a jab and good movement. I enjoyed this style, it kept you from getting busted up and won me alot of fights. He was always having me watch Ray Robinson on film, he trained me in his image. Lots of jabs, set it up with a feint and drop the right followed by the hook. I loved that guy, wish we never parted.
When I turned pro Jackie asked me who I wanted to train me and I choose a man named Johnny Moore. This guy was a conditioning freak. He got me in great shape and I was always able to fight strong when I was with him. The thing that he changed was that he made me an aggressive fighter instead of an outside fighter. His theory was if that man moves here, you cut him off and dig. If he moves there, you cut him off and dig even harder. He made me an in your face fighter that would never give an opponent a chance to breathe. The best thing that he got me doing was rolling with shots while coming in and countering hard off of them. It was power man, the power to do what ever you wanted to a man.
Before I turned pro Jackie wanted me to have one last amatuer fight so Johnny and I went to Ohio to fight a hometown guy who was planning on turning pro. I was his test and he was mine to see if we were ready. I stayed in this guys face from the opening bell, rolling and countering, it was awsome. He was afraid after a while to even throw a punch because I would stick one or two right back in his ass when ever he did. Him being tentative to throw left me the oppertunity to dig and to dig hard. At one point I had him in a corner and was bustin' on him something good. He actualy turned his back to me and raised a leg up for extra protection, he was outclassed.
I like the boxing on the outside, its effective and usefull when you cant wlak through a guy. But fighting with endless aggression was cool, it gave me the power to take a man out but more than that it gave me a chance to take his heart. I could see it in their eyes when they knew they werent going to get out of this one. As Johnny used to say, "I got a lil' white boy here, sez hes agonna kick all yo'all asses, whose first." It was cool..............Rockin'
