I've met three Louisville natives of the relevant age who swear on having beaten Clay in schoolyard brawls.

I BET BET THERE ARE A HUNDRED PEOPLE FROM HIS ERA WHO SAY THEY BEAT HIM IN REAL AMATEUR FIGHTS, TOO, WHEN HE WAS A KID. We have a kid here in my area who never went pro...yet as an amateur he beat, among others, IBO 122 champ Mike Oliver, former WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria and current WBC 175 champion Chad Dawson!

Nice read Scully. Its amazing some of the weight classes some guys came from. Hard to imagine Byrd at WW or Hearns at 132lbs. Hey would it be possible for you to post a link to a few of these amateur fights. I would love to Pryor-Hearns.

Also you talk about guys who dont make it for whatever (a million possibilities) reason but of all the talented amateur fighters that you saw who is the fighter you are most surprised that didn't make it or didn't make it as far as you had thought his talent could've taken him?

In my book I have a chapter dedicated specifically to those guys you speak of, guys who didnt Make it for whatever reason. I talk a lot about Bernard Superbad Mayes...the AWESOME Cuban ANGEL ESPINOSA....Mylon Watkins, KevinBryant, Nick Kakouris, Bomani Parker..so many to remember.

Also, you can youtube the Pryor-Hearns amateur fight

Also, check this guy out...Terry Christianson, an elite amateur with over 300 fights who never went pro...I beat him at the nationals one year, he was definitely good....here he is...beating GERALD MCCLELLAN

Those were great reads. Fascinating information. As Left2Body said, it's hard imagining the fighters you mention at such a low weight class.

Big shame about what happened to Mays.

I can't imagine how boxing would look if some of these talented guys went pro.

Damn that was a good fight for amateurs. That Terry guy had some nice uppercuts.......from that fight it appears that he was a natural southpaw who fought in the orthodox, am I right? Also what was the glove sizes, they looked pretty small.
