In boxing, nothing is accidental. Everything is a matter of will. A fighter wills a fortuitously placed shot onto his opponent's face. He doesn't slip on a banana peel on anesthetize his foe. In that sense, a lucky punch is almost impossible.

it usually depends on the 2 fighters reputations. like rahman ko'ing lewis I would categorize that as a lucky punch ko. But if Evander did the exact same thing to Lewis, I wouldn't say its lucky.

Because Rahman didn't intend to punch Lewis?

listen, there are many interpretations to this. mine is that if the ODDS are against you and you defy the odds, than you are lucky. If Rahman fought lewis another 10 times, chances are that the ko wouldn't happen again thus making the ko a lucky one.

the Tarver shot that KO'd Jones IMO was a lucky punch tarver wasn't even looking, but Tarver was also the only guy i've seen that really troubled Jones so i think it was a combination of style and luck that KO'd Jones and that paved the way to Jones loss of confidence and his other KO loss.

                Yes.

And the textbook example of that would be how Hasim Rahman knocked Lennox Lewis out with a single right hand. Lewis called the punch "lucky" many people believed it was "lucky" because we were used to Lewis not lapsing..........when he does he could get caught. However the rematch ensued........and he followed up with one of the nastiest knockouts in the history of boxing.

                That 1-2 was horrific.

But based on the fighters reputation?

So an underdog upsetting the favorite will be considered lucky because he had the odds against him?
                  That doesn't make sense...

What about a shot where one fighter isn't looking? He throws a punch, but he has not carefully scoped out where it is supposed to go. It happens to land directly on the chin. Is that a lucky shot?

you lack perspective my friend. when I say odds against, it doesn't necessarily mean underdog. there are underdogs that win and they aren't underdogs anymore. but if a fighter does something that he probably can never do again, than its lucky regardless of being an underdog or not.
