No matter what happens today or even in the future, Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson will remain as the biggest upset of all time. Tyson was this seemingly invincible beast that was knocking everyone out and he gets knocked out by a fighter who has shown in the past that he didn't have heart. Not only did Buster beat Tyson, but he dominated virtually every round and knocked him out. Max Schmelling was not a 42-1 underdog against Louis unlike Douglas was against Tyson.

Was Schmelling-Louis that big an upset?

Schmelling was a former champ. Douglas when he fought Tyson . . .

Yes, Schmelling was a big underdog against Louis. Louis was a hot up and comer that was unbeaten and looked unbeatable but he never had that win over an experience champion like Schmelling. Schemlling was also coming out of retirement and that made the odds even worse from him. Schmelling took advantage of Louis keeping his left hand down by landing the right hand counter over and over again. Until finally knocking out Louis from accumulation in the 12th. Louis was the rematch by first round KO because he was more experienced this time around.

        Here are the odds

Douglas over Tyson. No one expected what happened in Tokyo to happen, at least some people gave Schmeling a chance to win.

Tyson-Douglas. As others said, while regarded very highly Louis was still a little green and facing a former champ, Tyson was considered to be an unbeatable force and was facing a journeyman fighter.

Can't truely say, I wasn't alive in that era (lousi/schmeling) but from what I know Douglas was a nobody and cam from nowhere to beat Tyson.....Louis and Schmeling were two of the better known and established fighters of the time when it took place.

Tyson-Douglas. Schmelling was a former champion and Louis was still a prospect.

I'll put it this way. I was 9 years old when Tyson lost to Douglas. The only boxers I knew existed were Tyson, Leonard and Ali. I had no idea when Tyson was fighting or whatever and MY TEACHER announced/asked to the class if anyone heard about Tyson losing. It was a HUGE thing.
