Why does Margarito seem to get a free pass for losing to Williams?

Seriously... this isn't a hate thread, but I'm just curious.

People always talk about having to take a few tune-ups and then beating a good contender to get back in a title shot position for most fighters, but for some reason, people think that Margarito gets to skip that whole thing.

It seem especially strange to me in his case for two reason.

    1. He lost to Paul Williams, who was viewed as a special fighter, but now that Quintana showed that he has some huge flaws, that doesn't look like such a respectable loss IMO.

    2. Welterweight is supposed to be the most stacked divison in boxing, however, they are just handing out title shots to fighters who are coming off losses... if the divison is so stacked, shouldn't there be a ton of guys who aren't coming off losses, who are more than good enough to get a title shot instead of Margarito?

Why does Margarito get a free pass? It certainly isn't because of a financial advantage that he has, so what is it?

odd, i remember him getting analy ****d here on the forum when he lost. anyway, he is in a position where he didnt have as much to lose as Diaz or Williams did. he was kinda in that gray area where another loss for him would mean it would be just a little hard for him to reach the top and a win wouldnt have put him on anyone's "to fight" list.

Yeah, but the plan was to fight Cotto. And all he had to do was beat a guy who didn't win a round at lightweight and got KO'd against Shane Mosley.

Margarito at 147 can probably **** a little harder than Mosley did at 135. I don't think it was a surprise to anyone that Margarito won that fight, and pretty easily too.

Anyways, after beating someone like Golden Johnson, now Margarito is already back to where he was before he lost to Williams. It doesn't really seem like he did enough to work off that loss IMO.

The rules that would apply to regular fighters just don't apply to the baddest man on the planet.

I sure don't see him getting a free pass, at least not on this board. He lost a close decision to a fighter with a difficult style. The reason he walks right into a title shot with Cintron is that he beat KC badly, and that alone makes him a worthy contender, not to mention the revenge factor for Cintron. Quintana got a title fight coming off a bad loss, and now Williams will get a rematch with Quintana coming off that loss.

i get what your saying. i dont know if its just me, but because of the way he lost (by points and paul looked like HE got whooped) didnt really affect the opinion on marg's worth in the division. i dont know if i explained that correctly so forgive me. he didnt loose in a bad way maybe? ionno. i mean, he IS rematching Cintron which is a fight that Cintron wanted. So i guess you could say Marg got lucky that someone who recently had a win and has a belt wants a piece of him. Remember also who his, Cotto and Cintron's promoter is.

You could say that if he loses to Cintron, well, it confirms that his position as a player in the Welter division has expired. If he were to beat Cintron in the same manner he did initially, you could make the case that he is where he should be regardless of the loss to Williams.

Whether Marg wins or not people are always downing him so it made no difference in the forum that he lost.

I agree with Scott, Tony didnt really get a free pass, everyone who hates him or who is neutral threw the Williams loss in his face. Because the Williams loss was close the WBO kept him high in the rankings as they did with Kendall Holt after his loss to Torres.

And the reason he has an IBF title **** is solely cuz Cintron gave it to him. He didnt cut a line, Cintron personally resquested him as an opponent.

I guess that makes more sense. He gets a rematch with the guy he completely ****ed up for a title, and if he wins that, then he gets a unification shot against Cotto, because his IBF title would be worth enough to get him that shot.

Okay, I guess this makes a little more sense now.

Dude, it's an optional defense for Cintron. He can fight whoever the **** he wants. No justification needed. Anyway, Margarito destroyed this kid already so that clearly makes him worthy.
