  • Juan Diaz: A Potentially Costly Loss

By Cliff Rold - Someone should get now former Lightweight titlist Juan Diaz (33-1, 17 KO) Rid**** Bowe’s number. Bowe could tell Diaz everything he needs to know about the downside of a manager who aggravates the power brokers of the game. When the belts and victories are piling up, it’s okay but, with a loss, the bill comes due.

    Diaz’s bill could be costly.

Diaz’s manager, Willie Savannah, had done an excellent job in boxing terms of maneuvering his young charge. The last eight years had been an excellent example of how to pace a blue-chip prospect through the various testing stages on the way to the upper echelon of the sport. It was a job comparable to the one Rock Newman did for Bowe.

There is though a business side to boxing and Savannah hasn’t made any more friends than Newman did in that arena. While less bombastic and public, Savannah has brokered Diaz’s promotional journey through affiliations with Main Events and Don King Productions. Neither relationship ended with the promoters speaking fondly of Savannah. In getting to Don King, Savannah also sparked a public war of words with a Golden Boy Promotions who thought they had the inside track to signing Diaz a couple of years ago. [details]

It is really costly. Juan was calling out PAC before and even criticized PAC for fighting old and washed up boxers. Now Juan got a dose of his own medicine, beaten in his own game by an old boxer.

Juan Diaz stocks took a nose dive and Don King is still a boxing business genius.

Out of all the boxers he has fought, I'm extremly shocked he lost to Nate Campbell still. I consider Acelino Freitas to be a far better fighter then nate campbell. I know styles make fights, but I just don't think Nate Campbell is as good as ppl think he is.

Juan will be back. He got beat by Campbell, but he didn't get whomped bad enough to say he was humbled. He might have lost his chance to face Pac if he beats JMM, but all he needs is some recovery time and a win over one of the top 10 ranked LWs and he'll be back in the title hunt.

Diaz will be back, I'm sure of it. In fact, I think if Campbell and Diaz fought again, Diaz would win. It does seem that Savannah sometimes plays more hardball than he should and is looking for the big paydays now but isn't really thinking about the future.

If this is how you really feel, then I suggest you not bother with boxing anymore. Nate Campbell looked very good in his last fight and although he has suffered a few setbacks in his career, I knew he would crush Juan Diaz and I'm quoted as saying this in the Maxboxing forum Friday. Nate is a very underrated fighter and deserves more credit than he has received up until now.

Acelino Freitas? LOL. By the time Juan Diaz got to him he was only a shadow of himself and slightly over the hill. No one credible expected Acelino to beat Juan.

Nate is 36 yrs old but a young 36. He started his pro career very late so he's still very fresh. Like it or not Nate Campbell is the "truth" of the lightweight division unless Michael Katsidis can prove different because Joel Casamayor is also over the hill and only a shadow of himself. Katsidis will destroy him and the mega showdown for supremacy of the lightweights will be decided by either Katsidis or Campbell.

Here's an even nicer idea. Since Campbell/Don King won't grant Juan an immediate rematch, Juan should take the loser of Casamayor-Katsidis fight since Campbell most probably takes the winner. Sort of loser vs. loser and winner vs. winner.
