No, Roy was never a real heavyweight champ.

but...considering Roy came up from such lower weights to win a heavyweight 'title'...should mean a lot.

also, consider this...Roy Jones Jr., not at his natural weight at all, past his prime a bit, and at his first fight at a weight class above 175 lbs beat John Ruiz more impressively than the #2 Heavyweight at this moment, Ruslan Chagaev, did.
and also, the Ruiz that Roy fought may have been more 'prime' than the one Chagaev beat(If Ruiz ever had a prime), considering that the Ruiz Roy fought was coming off of a win over Kirk Johnson+went on to win against Rahman and Oquendo, while the Ruiz that Chagaev fought was coming off loses to James Toney and Andrew Golota.

    just keep that in mind.

personally, I think there can be only one 'champ' at a time. and at that time, that person, without a doubt, was Lennox Lewis.

if you want to be technical, then you can say Roy was a 'champ', but not the champ.

In the end, it doesnt matter, because its all terminology when it gets down to it. what matters is 'who' that person beat and 'how' they won.

NOT A FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION!!! Roy should get credit for decisively defeating a top 5 heavyweight. he should get credit for being a heavyweight titlist, but being a titlist doesn't make you a champion, it makes you a titlist, HUGE DIFFERENCE. Lennox Lewis was the undisputed champion, john Ruiz was a contender that Lewis didn't fight. I personally wanted jones to fight Lewis next, but lennox fought Vitali weeks later and the fight never materialized.

I give Roy Jones credit for having the skill to beat John Ruiz and win an alphabet title....With that being said, John Ruiz was one of the worst heavyweight titleists ever and he is considered a joke in the boxing world....If Jones had fought a real top heavyweight like Wlad or Vitali he would've been knocked out cold or murdered....Jones has a terrible chin and he would've NEVER been successsful at heavyweight had he stayed there or started his career there.

Was he A former heavyweight champion?

NOBODY is saying he was THE heavyweight champion

Nobody is saying he was the UNDISPUTED champion...

But would you consider him a former HW champion?
We all know you sleep in matching Roy Jones Pyjamas and Bed linen.
                    Roy held a Trinket .
He was NEVER THE HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMP AS LENNOX LEWIS held that moniker at the time Roy juiced up to fight Ruiz.
Roy was fortunate that Ruiz held the Trinket.
It didn't take Roy long to get KO'ed not long after without the Juice either.
                    And BRUTALLY KO'ED.
All you Ballbags keep arguing that Roy was a HW champ.
But deep in your hearts you know you are suckers for believing that nonsense.
It's so very hard to come to terms that someone you hold dear was a cheat and a phoney.
                    Isn't it?
                    Oh sorry I forgot.
You aren't intelligent enough to realise you had the wool pulled over your eyes.

                      On a sidenote.
How did Ruiz come by his WBA belt by the way?
Did he defeat Lewis for it?
When you can find out the answer to this question you will figure out the truth.
