Stop with the bull****! Mayweather Cotto NEEDS to happen.

Why is it that other fighters get called on fighting "Paper Champions" but when it comes to Mayweather all the sudden Baldomir was the linear champ.. Oh yes, he dominated the welterweight division and racked up incredible victories over a battered Judah and an old Gatti

The belt doesn't make the champ folks.. the Champ makes the belt along with who he has fought.
If you have fought weak sauce opponents and defended it against them too.. your belt doesn't mean much does it?

There's so many ABC titles out there.. so quit with the bull****.

Fact is the play-offs are over.. Cotto pretty much knocked everyone off the ranking by defeating Quintana and Mosley. That right there knocked Collazo, Williams, Cintron and Margarito out the race having lost to Quintana and Mosley. [Marg to Williams] [Cintron to Marg]

Floyd and Cotto need to battle it out to determine who is the welterweight champ though, IMO there is no one at the top of the food chain right now.. and NO, Because you beat Baldomir it does not make you the welterweight champ!

whoever wins gets the welterweight crown... simple as that!

    Championship systems

Various forms of competition can be referred to by the term championship.

    Title match system

In this system, a competitor has to challenge the current champion to win the championship. This form of championship is used in boxing, wrestling and other combat sports.

You're right, Cotto has just done about everything and now he is the top challanger for Floyd's title. Facts are, by the championship system, you beat the champ, you are the champ.

The lineage goes somethin' like this:

    Mosley > Forrest > Mayorga > Spinks > Judah > Baldomir > Mayweather

Unless Floyd retires (like Lennox Lewis did) and the lineage breaks, he is the real champion OR if Cotto actually defeats him sometimes in the future.

Until then, Cotto can keep collecting belts that Baldomir vacated after he defeated Judah all he wants. He is not THE CHAMP.......just A CHAMP among many others.

He is the welterweight champion because he beat the guy that was champion, but I agree, the Cotto fight has to happen.

Sadly, at this point I think there is a greater chance of a Floyd vs Cotto WWE wrestling match than a real boxing match.

Mayweather hasn't fought anyone near their best, really. Maybe Castillo.

I reckon it needs to happen too, I think Mayweather would win, but until the fight happens, neither is the welterweight champ in my eyes.
