A Heavyweight Move Towards the Light

By Cliff Rold - It’s an old cliché, the one about the light at the end of the tunnel either being the sun or an oncoming train. It’s also an apt description of today’s Heavyweight division heading into this Saturday’s HBO (9:30 PM EST/6:30 PM PST) showdown between titlists and top contenders Wladimir Klitschko (49-3, 44 KO, Ring Magazine #1, IBF belt) of the Ukraine and Sultan Ibragimov (22-0-1, 17 KO, #6, WBO belt) of Russia. Is this the beginning of the drive to clarity in the division or just a road bump on the avenue of chaos?

For the two warriors heading to the ring this weekend, it’s the former. With the WBC belt almost sure to be tied up in politics through most of 2008 and no guarantee that the winner of Klitschko-Ibragimov will face WBA titlist Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KO) before the end of the year, the possibility of more chaos ultimately winning out can’t be ignored. To defeat that depressing thought, we have one night of something better. [details]

Great comments Cliff on Oscar's bull**** "thank you to the fans". I'll be laughing at the suckers who can't see through that.

I don't understand the hate on Oscar for getting a rematch with Floyd? Everyone who wants to see Floyd fight Cotto knows Floyd will stop Cotto by the 8th round. Cotto's style is taylor made for Floyd. Oscar's style poses a greater risk to Floyd.

I think you're right about the last part. But we've already seen Floyd-Oscar, and the rematch is not suddenly going to become a great fight. Oscar had his chance and couldn't do it.

Cotto on the other hand has earned his shot at the best; he's destroyed everything in his path, and he won a fair decision over the other former WW great. He deserves the fight and the fans deserve the chance to see the best fighters of the current generation in the ring and not just in our heads.

Do you think Cotto will beat Mayweather?
