Hopkins Vs Calzaghe Resumes Compared

They are about even. I think Bernard just smudges it (just like his fighting style derp.)
Why? You can go on to this crap about Trinidad and De La Hoya being the smaller man, but the fact that they agreed and had fought at the weight before and were sucessful (well atleast Trinidad was).
Trinidad had knocked out William Joppy in 5 rounds. Not anyone has done that before. Trinidad was also pretty big at Jr. Middleweight. He was also the favorite of that fight. Trinidad perfectly fit into that weight and weight really shouldn't be an issue. Back in 1957, Carmen Basillo weighed 153 pounds when he beat Sugar Ray Robinson, who weighed 160. That's 7 pounds apart and yet Basillo still won. Fighters back then, would jump weight in big doses, but still found a way to be sucessful. Bernard was better and still knocked him out. It's not like he struggled against Trinidad.
De La Hoya is a bit different. I can see people arguing that he was to small due to the horrible shape he was in for the strum fight. However, he was still in a lot better shape for the Hopkins fight and did decent. That and on top of all that, Hopkins knocked him out. Not anyone has done that before.
They weren't blown up welterweights. They were fighting and sucessful at Jr.Middleweight, and had sucess at Middleweight (Especially Trinidad).
And Hopkins had to come down for the Wright fight too. People make it seem like jumping two divisions is god awful, but Hopkins did it. Ray Robinson almost did it. Harry Greb did it. Michael Spinx did it. Archie Moore did it. Manny Pacquiao did it!
People really overexagrate being "blown up" Oh by the way, if Calzaghe had fought Trinidad or De La Hoya, Calzaghe fans would have been perfectly fine with it.Comment

I don't see why people say Kessler could beat Hopkins. Kessler doesn't have that Natural Athletic ability that Jones or Taylor had. Kessler hasn't shown that he really can adapt to a dirty fighter like Bernard either. He has a good jab, but Hopkins fought one of the best jabbers in the sport and he made it uneffective.
And now on to Joe's resume:
I think it's good. He has some great names. I think beating Reid is better then beating Lacy to be honest. Still, if people want to discredit Hopkins for his resume, you can do it to Joe's too.
And no it's not that bull**** "Because he didn't fight in the states!!"
Charles Brewer for example. Seems like a good oppnenot and he was, but just before that he was TKOed in 3 rounds by Awnton Echols. I'm aware that could have been a premature stoppage, but what on earth has Brewer done to get a shot on Calzaghe.
People give crap to Hopkins for fighting Robert Allen 3 times, but why the hell did Calzaghe fight Mairo Veit 3 times? There was also Richie Woodhall, who had been knocked out by Keith Holmes in 1996.
Now obviously, Veit, Brewer, and Woodhall are a lot better then what I make it seem like, but you can do the same thing to Calzaghe on what you did to Hopkins.
Though like I said, I have them about even. They both fought a lot of good contenders which helped there resumes. That goes unoticed by a lot of people actually.
So about even I would say.Last edited by warp1432; 02-20-2008, 04:42 PM.Comment
