Lenard Lane won Houston Golden Gloves 3 times, but couldnt ever get past Charles Hatley at state. He's got a good style, strong and quick, but is slow to react and doesnt use his jab. He is not at Nate Campbell's skill level. He is also trained by Derwin Richards, who was Juan's chief corner for Julio fight. I have lots of video of Lenard sparring with Juan, Mike Alvarado, and others. You can find some of his Am fights and sparring on video.google.com. He's ready to turn pro but there's a lack of promoters in Houston right now.
Juan works on different things during sparring, if he sparred like he fights in his bouts, he'd have broken hands and be worn out. So to say Lenard looked good, isnt a comment on Juan's status. Besides the fact that they've probably sparred a 100 rounds together which builds familiarity.
The "contender" star you referred to was Ahmed Kaddour, who doesnt train very hard.
I saw Juan spar last week with Francisco Lorenzo. If you recall Lorenzo took a few rounds off of Juan a few years ago before Juan was champ. Lorenzo also holds a win over Nate Campbell. Juan absolutely owned Lorenzo in that sparring session. People in the gym who didnt know who it was were asking why'd they bring in this old dude to spar?
