One thing I think that was important was having Kevin Rooney in the corner.
Now while Rooney is far from a great trainer, it was a chemistry thing. Rooney was the right trainer for Tyson. They worked well together. Tyson started showing some laziness in the 4th or 5th round against Pinklon Thomas but Rooney was a good voice in the corner. Same with Tony Tucker when Tucker was having early success and Tyson adjusted and starting beating Tony with the jab and body shots.
Tyson was lazy in the clinches for most of his career. He did do a good job at times of hitting Mitch Green with the free hand, and punching out of clinches in the Ruddock rematch (by then Tyson had more or less forgotten to move his head and slip shots).
Agreed 100% about the uppercut. Against fighters who swarm and pressure like Tyson, the uppercut is key. That's the punch Tyson showed the most susceptibility to, I remember Green, Tillis, Ferguson, Tucker....all catching Tyson with good uppercuts.
That's also another reason how I really question how Tyson would have done against Rid**** Bowe, who had a great right uppercut and good in-fighting skills. The main reason why I still make Bowe an underdog, however, is the fact that his defense was **** and he liked to brawl and exchange so much.
