Mike Ruler: "Mike Tyson is overrated"

I think he is overrated. Who did he beat. Name a win, and name his opponent...you can't. Not any opponent of note. You could say he knocked out John "Hit Me" Doe..but no quality opponents.

Tyson is destined to forever be overrated by some and underrated by others. I tend to side with overrated, but in the 1980's he was a serious force who would have been (at least) a threat to anyone ever in the early rounds.

Was the youngest heavyweight champion ever at 20 years old when he ko'd Frank Bruno(40-4 38 ko's) in 3 for his wbc title. fought 28 times in a span of 2 years, 85-86. KO'd Trever Berbick in 2, Larry Holmes in 4, and Spinks in 1, and Ruddock in 7 and a rematch by UD. Other than holmes, the others aren't known to be great cuz Tyson didn't let them become great. He just lost his focus after he went to jail for ****. But he is one of the greatest heavyweights of all-time IMO.

Larry Holmes fought in a bad era, Tyson on his day would give any heavyweight in history trouble, Ali mid 60s included.

Disagree. Ali would dance the whole night. You remember he did that against Smokin' Joe II and III. And by the 10th round Tyson would be frustrated because he wouldn't be able to land. You said Larry Holmes fought in a bad era, but Mike didn't? Oh, I forgot the great Michael Spinks, who sticks his chin out further than Quagmire...

Mike Tyson has many accomplishments, ask Hurricane. He "calculated" that Tyson is top 5 material when it comes to accomplishments. But like you said, he did not have enough defining wins, and credible ones at that. The less knowledgable fans think Larry Holmes was fighting since the 1800s by the time he faced Tyson, and they think Michael Spinks was coming from Welterweight to face him. And they know nothing about talented fighters who never fulfilled their potential like Tucker, Williams, Stewart and Thomas etc.

So in conclusion, an all time great that lacks wins against legends, but has a resume of consistent "good but not great" fighters, and recordbreaking accomplishments. I'd say he belongs in the bottom of the top 10, but higher when you look at things diffirently.

And btw, like someone said, he's overrated by many and underrated by many. You gotta balance it out if you want to be taken serious.

You would have to understand a lot more than just boxing to know what and who Mike Tyson was. Yes, it's possible at his best he could have knocked any fighter out in history. But he didn't live up to half of what he became. When rating him "career wise" side by side with other greats, he doesn't even come close. Rating how he would have done against those greats, he does come close and even better than most of them. A distinction must be made between the two ways we rate fighters because both do not compare with one another. When saying he's overrated, someone is always including abilities and career together. But there's a clear distinction between the two when it comes to Tyson.
