Michael Watson was very defensively sound, tucking himself beautifully and instictively. But Eubank didn't actually fight any decent counter-punchers! You're right. Watson's game was working behind his left hand, arrowing off and picking holes in people and tucking himself from misses or returns. Guys like Benn, Thornton and Wharton were real pressuring bruisers, but not an arrow-like 90s Hopkins. Hopkins back then wasn't really a counter-puncher, more of a relentless boxer-puncher who bypassed the jab.
The counter-punching, later Hopkins against Eubank would be mind-numbing, but Eubank would land from out of range, get his chin out of harms way without looking pretty and steal a round with a flashy flurry when he'd need to. That style just doesn't beat Chris Eubank. It doesn't.
