please shut up, and learn more about boxing history.
this thread stinks with old-timer bias (when you seem to know little about it) and sounds like you watched an episode of legendary nights and suddenly you're jack newfield x hank kaplan.
leonard was "ducking" the junior welterweight pryor and instead fighting guys like hearns, junior middleweight kalule, duran, and benitez?
You claim these greats didn't know what "ducking" meant?
well the same stuff that applies to floyd now (going for more lucrative bouts and avoiding the higher risk/lower reward bouts) can easily go for a number of greats.
jack johnson, once he became hw champ, never defended the hw title against a black contender except for a staged bout
Jack dempsey was inactive for 3 years during his title reign, said later he would have lost to langford if he had fought him, and didn't defend against harry wills. he finally had a change of heart after initially being quoted in the ring (a recent issue in the past few years quotes him) "i will pay no attention to colored challengers", but tex winter pulled the plug.
Ray Robinson, widely regarded as the greatest of all-time, didn't fight Charley Burley, proclaiming "I'm too pretty to fight Charley Burley"
Larry Holmes never unified against a WBA champ, was stripped for not fighting his mandatory in Greg Page, and never gave rematches to the guys who gave him hell such as Mike Weaver, Ken norton, and Tim Witherspoon.
Salvador Sanchez showed little interest at all in unifying against Eusebio Pedroza, despite their being much talk about a unification bout.
Great fighters such as Jimmy bivins, Archie Moore, and Ezzard Charles were shut out of the title picture, or "ducked", for years at light heavy (and even middle).
The reason why guys fought more often then is because they got paid less, and they had to fight to sustain a living.
You think a guy like Willie Pep, who stated his goal was to "make as much money as possible and get hit as little as possible", would have fought 250 times in today's era if he were getting paid today's money?
You think Ray Robinson, whom looked upon boxing as a business and said he never enjoyed the sport, would fight 200 times in today's time with HBO contracts?
Ouch

I said Tex Winter.
That's the basketball coach who designed the Triangle Offense.
I meant Tex Rickard.Comment

How many divisions did Floyd clear out exactly? It's a lot harder to clear out a whole division than to bounce around weight divisions and pick and choose belts. You guys make no sense. How can you say that when Floyd has a better resume then pretty much everyone in boxing and he's done it in different weight classes. EVery guy you just named is in the same exact class they started in. Let them go up 4 divisions and clear it out and then you can talk about Floyd.Comment

you mean winning 6 titles in 5 different weight classes isnt taking on challengers?????Yea that,s right ,all the good matches are being made in boxing right now ...just my opinion that they need more better matches like marg vs. cintron even though we seen this before at least its a good match. taylor vs. pavlik, paul williams vs. quintana you get my point...at least these fighter are willing to put up or shut up... and not taking year off and be able to keep there rating as p4p no.1... and that,s why he will never be at the top of boxing all time greats, because these guys didn,t know what ducking meant...those words were a insult in the good ole days...and the only other fighter that ducked a fighter was sugar ray against arron pryor...because ray knew he could have hit pryor with a bat and he would have kept coming, so shame on ray...so all you people who repect a fighter that fight these guys like a older dela hoya, older shane mosley, a blown up welter no defense ricky hatton and not the younger true welters of the division are not legitimate fans to the sport...back in the days they fought for less and i mean way less than what they receive now to fight, but they put there heart and soul in the sport and that,s the difference...Comment
