  • So...does anyone in here box?

Pro, Amateur or just for conditioning? I was just wondering cuz I don't see a lot of the regular people who post in here on the training/nutrition forums. I personally started boxing for conditioning about a year ago, I joined a local county gym here in Miami and I'm considering trying out the amateurs by the end of the year or maybe next. Right now I'm training 2-3 times a week and do my lifting the other every other day. Sorry if it's a lame topic but I'm not tired and can't fall asleep

Naw I used to box. My only chance to go pro was going to the Marines and I was going to go but 9/11 happened so i didnt go. Now I train a couple of fighters, but the one that I mainly train is going to go meet with A guy named Kerry and some of his associates that are on Mayweather's management team and they want to sign him to a small promotional deal to fight a few bums and see where he goes from there. He's my best friend and started him from absolutely nothing to almost a contract. So he said he wont sign unless I am part of his Training Team. Either Main trainer or assistant. He told them unless Im with him he wont sign so we are both going to LA March the 28 to see what happens and what goes from there. If they sign him Im going with him so i hope to make a name for myself with those guys. Maybe I can be an assistant or on someone else's team also if they like me.

i fought for 8 years, don't now, because i haven't trusted any of trainer like i did my dad, who turned to drgus unfortunately, but i used what he taught me and continued to train myself, like running 6-8 miles a day, punching the punching bag, 14 rounds, jump roping in 10 minute spurts, shadow boxing 8 rounds, at least 350 situps a day, and stretching at least 10 minutes a day. i know this seems a bit much, but when i was an active fighter it got me 25 wins with 20 knockkouts and only one very controversial defeat. in other words, i was robbed to the core, in my first fight and then i never lost again. now, today, i spar some when i'm not in school or working, i spar with my cousins and my uncles some in philly in out gym for about a good hour and a half, mainly nine, 4 minute rounds, so i can still get back into fully if i choose. i still hit my speed bag for about 20 minutes every other day.

so, i train myself still, punching everything, always keeping my combinations sharp and technique very sharp, and trust me, i don't mean to boast, but i am as skillful as can be, my strongest attribute besides my speed, was my counterpunching combinations. i used to block a jab with my right glove and counter with a left hook to the chest region followed by a right hook to the body and two left straights upstairs and i did this fast as **** also. i was blessed with speed and instinct and i took my time in my fights and no matter the situation, i always found open areas to strike and i was an accurate puncher also. i believe the way i trained with the punching mitts helped me th emost with my defense, even more tha sparring, because my dad had fast hands and my uncles had fast feet, so i used to have three trainers wit punchig mitts on throwing punches at me, not at the same time, but close in time, like when my dad trew a left hook at me, i'd have to block it and right after i blocked it, my uncle came from the side and threw a right straight at me, which helped me a lot with right handed fighters seeing how i was a natural southpaw. my other uncle worked the pads to my body right after my dad threw a combination at me. it's funny, i believ eth ereason i apprciate mayweather's style so much is because of how different he trained in how he honed his punching with his pad work. you see, when i used to hit the punching mitts, i would do it at a slow tempo first an ddevelop rhythms with it, rhythms my dad taught me, until and when it seemed as if i was getting it down packed and punching with ease, i'd start punching faster and he'd throw faster and then he'd throw something else at me to throw me off, and this is how i learned to be a good defensive fighter, part of it at least.

my dad threw me off guard many times, which inly helped me with punches that weren't conventionally and fundamentally thrown punches like wild hooks and pushed jabs, an di used to love whenmy opponents pushed their jabs because their body was opened so much and their ribs were exposed in a vulnerable position which is why i had 5 knockouts by body shots. when someone threw a wild punch at me, i mostly always saw it coming because i knew how and when to postion my body at all times and although i did get hit clean here and there i took a lot of the impact off of my chin with my body postioning, some with rolling my opponent's punches and some with just being in a position where i could get hit clean, but not too hard, which is something my dad stressed to me constantly, body positioning.

he'd tell me to touch my toes in workout sessions, like 300 hundred times to work on me being used to ducking low and not straining myslef at all. he worked on my back damn near every day with trying to tone it out and keep it as muscular as possible. i used to used the exercise machine people who rowed did, and i used do do pushups with 30 pound weights on my lower back and i was only allowed to to lower my back doing the pushups, not actual pushups with my arms lowering. this got to be more flexible and my waist was always lean, so i could avoid body punches a lot anyway.

i used ankle weights a lot an dwrist weights when hitting the punching bag and body protector and to get my jab faster and harder with more snap, i used to have to jab the punching bag with a 5 pound dumbell that used to hurt th eliving **** out of my arms and shoulders at first, but once i got used to it after months bitching and cussing, i felt the difference and right afterwards, my dad would have me jab the punching mitts with my wrist weight still on and do it in double jabs and triple jabs. i jabbed to the body a lot when i fought also because my dad always wanted me to to follow with a right hook on my opponent to his temple to get him offstride quickly, so i could control th etempo of the fight. i usually would just hit my opponent with a stiff jab to the body and a right slapping jab upstairs, because it landed a lot and i aimed for the nose usually so the impact was still effective. i never threw punches always hard, i slapped my punches also, just to land and frustrate my opponents because i knew how to control the fight very well, and i did in all of my fights, no matter who i fought. i had quick hands and quick feet and i fought off of the ropes a lor because my opponents loved to aim for my lean body because i'm sure they felt they could take me out, and it was a smart strategy if they could pull it off, and some did land flush on me and i felt the shots, but mostly i avoided them by constantly moving my hips left, left, right, and them moving off of the ropes back left.

i think my father wanted me to be the youngest professional champion in history and he wanted me to be in extremely amazing shape for every fight amature and pro. he would have me train for 6 to eight hours at different times of the night and day and i would get hardly nop sleep, i felt as if i was going to the army or something a lot. it killed me and my body at times where i couldn't even move to adjust my pillow. he had me constantly doing something, whether fighting inside the pocket, or off of the ropes, or moving around the ring, and i sparred with my cousins who weighed at least twice as much as me and they never took it easy on me. we were all technicians in the ring, but my cousin demo was a boxer puncher who turned into a puncher boxer. he focused primarily on his punchign power and my dad used to love to throw me in the ring with him to see just how effective my movement could be. he'd have demo focus on just hitting me where ever he could land and he was a fast puncher but with moderate movement, he was like a killer who moved very steadily(which was ****** when fighting me) and i would have to focus on mainly his body, and throwing my jab to his midsection and my right hook to the left side of his body. this used to anger me a lot so i would look at his hands, not his shoulders, because i knew he liked to go downstairs a lot and upstairs only to finish back downstairs, so i'd watch his hands and hip movement and as soon as he'd try to fake me out i threw a jab to his upper stomach and when he tried to bumrush me, i'd block his ****s with my gloves in a ray leonard type position and land two open handed hooks to his ribcage only to get him to open up more and right after he put his guard down for one second, boom, stiff jab to the midsection followed by an uppercut to his upper stomach with my left hand. you see, timing was everything to me when i fought. having speed and power means noting without timing. many of my knockouts would come from punches that i timed very accurately. i took a lot of pride in throwing beautiful looking shots, not sloppy shots that may have had power and speed on them, but looked to be thrown out of control. i shadowboxed at a slow tempo mainyl to work on my technique at all times, and i still do. i took pride in my performances and i always went back and studied my tapes after my fights. i men, constantly watching myself for hours to see how i could improve my left hook to the body, my jab to the stomach, my right uppercut to the midsection which i threw many times seeing how i knew how to postion myself to throw it effectively, and with great velocity. i focued primarily on my timing and defensive structure because i knew when i fought guys who weren't schooled enough to control a fight, and i could, even at my young age, i knew i had a victory everytime. i could adjust to any fighting style and a lot of times i had to, because people would always try to throw me off, which my dad took a lot of time to polish with me, preparing myself to make my opponents miss nearly all the time and when they tried to throw me off, i was mostly prepared for it, and took advantage of it, which i felt you had to do to win over the judges.

i would continue on my little rant about my boxing history, but i know you guys are probably bleeding from your eyes as you read this, so i am sorry for my long post. i just thought i'd give a little history of my fighting career/life. oh yea, i fought at 108 lbs and 105 lbs, and 90 lbs. i was 3 when i got into boxing and i fought until i was 14 years old, and still train today. i do miss the competiton, but am fine with my involvment in it. i rep boxing to the death people. i have my trophies, medals, belts, and memories of the sport with me always. i wear all type of boxing apparel from shorts, to sweatshirt hoodies, to sweat pants, to hats, to necklaces. i love boxing.

believe it or not, i trained much more than what i expalined to you guys, it was like all i did, that and school, so you can imagine how hard this was for me, but i always gave it my all, no matter how hurt or beat up or physically drained i was, i always worked hard. one day i'll tell you guys more stories of my matches and more training.
