    Can Margarito afford another loss?

When Margarito lost to Daniel Santos, it was overlooked because he still had a belt at 147. He went back down and beat Kermit Cintron and all was forgotten.

Then Paul Williams came out and desperately sought a fight with Margarito. Williams got what he wanted and beat Margarito then just as suddenly Margarito was passe'.

Margarito has run up wins over guys like Golden Johnson but now is at a crossroads. He has a fight on the table with Kermit Cintron but Carlos Quintana is coming in from the peripheral as another potential opponent.

Concievably, Quintana has the same toolbox to diffuse a cruder opponent like Margarito, who finds difficulty with crafty fighters. Cintron looks to be an easier opponent, but even that finds pitfalls.

Should Margarito lose to either man, is he done as a top contender?

It would hurt his career big time at this point.

You forget the Margarito and Quintanna history.

Margarito was looking for an opponet i think it was after Mayweather said "no thanks" to the 8 million. And Margarito tried getting Quintanna as an opponet who had just came off his win over Julio.

So maybe the fight that was supposed to be made gets made anyways.

Margarito by ko in the late rounds. Whats Quinanna going to hurt Margarito with?

I'm already baffled that Margarito is considered a top contender. The criticisms of his ability are clear and hard to refute- he's crude, often plodding, has many wide shots- he's a brawler. Antonio is kept afloat by a massive Mexican fan base, I know that, but I'm not alone in my belief that he was the weakest of the welterweight champions - and was beat by a very inexperienced, green Williams. Then a guy that Cotto mopped the floor with beats Williams - I know chain theories are often invalid but in this case that would seem to put Cotto, Quintana and Williams all ahead of Margarito - and that's not even mentioning Mayweather or anyone else at the weight. Margarito is not a top contender in my book and another loss won't take him out of the running- it'll prove he was never even in the race.

Once you are a name fighter who has held a title before you are always just one big win away from being in the spotlight again. For example if Zab Judah were to fight and beat Shane Mosley, he would become a valid challenger for any of the champions despite all his losses in the division. A loss for Margarito would take away any leverage he has though, and he would be forced to take what he can get. The one thing he'll always have going for him is having some name recognition and a TV friendly style of fighting.

Exactly. I mean Judah lost to Baldomir and people still consider him a contender.

I think he could afford one loss if it came against the likes of a Cotto, but if he were to lose against Cintron or Quintana at this point in his career it might set him back quite a bit. Still I don't know how much it would affect him. The WW division is loaded with good fighters and one win could always give you that next shot.
