Carlos Quintana: "I've Recovered What I'd Lost"

On Saturday night, Carlos Quintana (25-1, 19KOs) defied the odds by outboxing the much larger Paul "The Punisher" Williams (33-1, 24KOs) to win the WBO welterweight title at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. The scores were 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112. [details]

Rematch is necessary. Williams didn't have the juice in his hands to guide those combinations tonight for whatever reason. He looked rusty to me. It's been 7 months since the Marg fight. He should have taken something small, even, just to get some work in, in November. This was not the Paul Williams I've seen before. If he would have thrown 1000 punches and still produced the same outcome, I'd accept that he isn't what I thought he was, but that wasn't the case. Something was wrong with him tonight. He wasn't all there. The fluidity he displayed in the past was absent. Again, I blame his camp for keeping him in a freezer for 7 months. He should have parlayed his victory by staying active and getting his name out there. Now he's stuck without a zero, and the casual fan still doesn't know who the **** he is. That said, I think he beats Quintana in a rematch. Paul didn't get punished. That's contrived bull****. He was more willing to keep fighting after 12 rounds than Quintana. Paul was the one trying to trade shots in the late rounds. He just didn't land enough. Or throw enough. Quintana fought great, but he fought over his head against a rusty Paul Williams. He won't do it again.

Of course he wasn't, because his opponent was something Paul hadn't seen before. Your post is SUCH bull****. You say Paul was rusty cuz he didn't fight in 7 months, well, he didn't fight for 8 before the Margarito fight and he did just fine. You're only as good as the guy in front of you allows you to be, and in this fight, Paul was completely outclassed. Why does every time a guy lose people think something was wrong with HIM? Paul fought like he always does, he just faced a more skilled opponent.

What (besides bias and nuthuggery) would make you think a rematch would be any different?

Like I said, if Paul had thrown his usual number of punches and still lost, I would accept that he isn't what I thought. He wasn't throwing his jab nearly as sharp as it was against Tony M. Or as often. The fluidity wasn't there. The head movement and the crafty footwork weren't there. He didn't respect Quintana enough as a puncher, and it showed. I've seen Paul enough to know that he should have won this fight. Quintana can't do this again, I promise you that.

That was because Quintana didn't let him do all those things. Margarito didn't move around like Quintana did thus allowing Williams to set his feet and get off his shots, Quintana's movements forced Williams to constantly reset his feet and rust shouldn't have been a big problem because he was laid off for a longer period before he fought Margarito.

Quintana should give him a rematch. I dont see anyone else wanting to fight Quintana at this point. This just shows how overated Marg and Williams are. I think Quintana, Williams and Margarito are all very good welters but not at the level of Cotto or Floyd, or even Shane.

Exactly. Is this that hard to understand for a biased nuthugger? Quintana boxed, used angles, and constanly kept Paul wondering. Margarito comes forward and stays in front, he knows no other way of fighting. Don't you think it's easier to throw 100 punches a round against a stationary target than against a moving one?

Williams still has the potential to be the best at 147, after Floyd is gone in a few years. The only thing that was exposed was that he's still too green to consistently beat the best fighters in his division. I hear a lot of slack boxing fans saying he's "finished" at 26 years old. Rubbish. This was a learning experience fight for Paul. No matter how gifted you are, it's very hard to be and beat the best. All the guys in the top 10 are extremely tough opponents for anyone. He realizes that now, I think. At the end of the day, this is athletic competition. Losses are an inevitability for nearly all its practitioners. Paul made it very far before he experienced defeat. And he can go farther, because it's not about never losing. This isn't a game of Russian Roulet. A lot of fans can't wrap their minds around that, sadly. This is boxing. This is take on all comers. Paul Williams is boxing. And he will be back.

Williams won't be at 147 in a few years, I agree with the rest of your post though.
