    Would You Have Been Upset.......?

if Smoger had stopped the Pavlik fight after Taylor rocked him the 2nd time and sent him flying accross the ring? Many people just glance over it now but lets face it, mostly every other ref wouldve stopped that fight. I bet Nady & Cortez wouldve.

Do you guys ever think about that? Do you guys ever think about how much that changed history. We would be looking at both Taylor and Pavlik totally different now. That wouldve been a 2nd round KO. Taylor would be looked at as a major star and it wouldve took a million years for Pavlik to get another title shot. Its just funny to me because history can so easily be changed in a split second. You have to think there have been alot of other fights like that in history. We always talk about judges but refs can have a huge impact, e****ally when it comes to stoppages like the Taylor-Chavez fight. Any other ref probally wouldve let Meldrick go on in that fight and history would be totally different.

Its not only about that one fight but it changes everything that happeneds after that. Taylor right now probally would be fighting Calzaghe in a super mega fight that alot of people would say should be for the #1 spot P4P after there recent wins. Pavlik wouldve been almost like the new Jerry Clooney. Its crazy to think about. Also trust me when I say that this is no diss to anyone. I dont care either way about these 2 guys. Im not a Taylor fan or a Pavlik hater. I dont have any strong feelings fro them either way. I just like to watch both of them fight. This thread wasnt about a diss to Pavlik but it was about refs and changing history. People glance over it but it is a real serious thing.

On the flip side there are also alot of other fights that probally have been stopped like many refs wouldve stopped the Taylor fight only for us not to even find out that the guy wouldve survived and came back to KO the other guy

The fact is he recovered during that round so I think the ref was right to give him some time. A TKO stoppage would have been a travesty IMO. Take your point though, history would be very different for Pavlik now.

Well, what can I say? Thank God for Smoger! He really is a great ref and I'm glad he saw that Pavlik just got caught with some dumb **** and wasn't totally ****eyed after all that. Let's also take into account, he was clearly hit in the back of the head when he went stumbling around the ring with his back to Taylor. I think Smoger saw that also and rather than interupt the action to yell at Taylor for that, he let it continue knowing Pavlik was still in there, just got caught with an illegal shot.

No other ref would have stopped the fight!

Pavlik was back on his feet in a couple of seconds, he wasn't seriously hurt.

Im not talking about the knock down. Every ref wouldve gave him that but his legs were gone and his eyes were dazed. When the fight resumed Taylor was catching him again and Pavlik then went flying accross the ring. Ive seen alot of fights stopped like that. Even the Floyd-Hatton fight was kind of similar to that. Remember that Cortez pulled Floyd off him while Hatton was still standing. Nady is a very quick stoppage guy. If you bobble on him like that after you just go dropped then he is stopping it

I agree, Pavlik stood up and although his equilibrium was off he was clearly aware and thinking..

no,,,,most quality refs wouldnt have stopped it that soon. that would have been a big time premature stoppage and the ref would have taken a lot of slack for it

Yeah I would've been upset. Pavlik was up and knew where he was, his legs weren't under him but his mind and his eyes were clear.

Only an inexperienced ref would've stopped the fight at that point.
Pavlik staggered after the KD because of a rabbit punch but quickly clinched and recovered.

Here is the second round of the fight. Pavlik was on spaghetti legs but he is damn tough. I've seen people survive from worse, just watch Shavers vs Holmes II, Archie Moore vs Yvon Durelle I or the most obvious Corrales vs Castillo I.
