People who say Hopkins has faced Smaller Opponents

What about Marvin Hagler? I've seen a guy with a Hagler Avatar tell me Hopkins is way overrated and all he has done is beaten smaller guys, he shouldn't be considered as an alltime middleweight great.

Duran = Lightweight and Hagler won a very close decision
    Leanord = Welterweight..Oh well...he lost that fight
Hearns = Welterweight, the best win of Hagler's career

Both of them are all-time greats, but Marvin Hagler is the greatest Middleweight of all time.

Who has Hopkins faced that was the caliber of Leonard, Hagler, or Hearns again? Besides RJJ, who he lost to. And I hope you can recognize that Hearns is a MUCH bigger (and better) opponent than DLH at middleweight.

But you must remember those fighters weren't the only fighters Hagler beat just like Trinidad and De La Hoya weren't the only fighters Hopkins beat.

The opposition Hopkins beat at middleweight:

Keith Holmes was a two-time middleweight champion.
Robert Allen was the interim middleweight champion.
Simon Brown was a former light middleweight champion who KO'd Terry Norris.
John Jackson was a former middleweight champion.
Carl Daniels was a former light middleweight champion.
William Joppy was a two-time middleweight champion.
Antwun Echols and Howard Eastman were worthy opponents because of their punching power. Echols was 22-2 (22 KO's), Eastman was 40-1 (34 KO's).

Those aren't 'great' fighters but they were all solid opposition.

Hagler beat his fair share of solid opposition too and I would rank Hearns better than Trinidad at middleweight and Duran better than De La Hoya at middleweight, it's close though.

Also losing to Leonard with a controversial decision is no worse than losing to Taylor with a controversial decision. Both were past their prime too.

While the Hopkins hate is totally uncalled for, so is the Hagler hate.

Hearns was a HUGE welterweight and fighting at Jr.middleweight too. He then went on to beat Virgil Hill at Lightheavy to win the WBA. I think it was because Hagler came out blazing and Hearns' weak chin more then anything.

The Duran fight on the otherhand....yeah. Duran was "blown up"

Still I don't know what's more overrated: Past his prime, blown up, robbery, or overrated.

i agree Hagler is great because of how good Leanard ,Duran ,Heanrs were as Welterweights etc

Duran had to alter his game plan straight away ,Duran as a Middleweight could'nt have employed his usual aggressive style like he would have done had he fought Hagler as Lightweight or Welterweight so Hagler has a clear advantge straight away not to mention the Power issues & durability issues

Felix Trinidad is highly regarded as one of the best Welterweights of all time. Tommy Hearns was also a highly regarded Welterweight who moved up to Middleweight to face Hagler.

A Sugar Ray Leonard/Oscar De La Hoya comparison is not that far fetched either when you're talking a prime Oscar.

Not to mention Winky Wright being the #2 p4p fighter in the world at the time Hopkins beat him, and Antonio Tarver being the #1 man in a division 10lbs above Hopkins' normal weight.

those are the big superstar opponents for hagler, but hagler faced and beat a good number of fighters who were legitimate middleweight contenders (or champs) at the time.

                  antufermo, minter, hamsho, briscoe, colbert.

both hagler and hopkins are greats i would say.

I consider Hagler an alltime middleweight great. This thread is just about how much **** people talk about Hopkins, I even dont like Hopkins because of his bitchy attitude (Throwing PR Flag, Shoving Winky Wright, Abusing the fans and not signing autographs after losing to Taylor, saying he will never lose to a white man, etc etc etc.

But still at 43 years old he is facing one of the best P4P fighters in the game right now. He already beat 2 P4P fighters in his last 2 fights (Both Tarver and Wright were ranked in the top 10 before Hopkins beat them)
