Since you are going by yourself find the cheapest hotel you can on the strip. You won't be spending too much time there anyway and everything as someone said is fairly close together.

yeah palms is nice I stay at the Rio, Its off the strip but like you said its a short taxi or you can take there free shuttle right to the strip
