In Roy-Ruiz, Roy was guaranteed $10 million, with Ruiz only to get paid from the PPV upside. Everyone called Ruiz a moron for agreeing to such a deal, even though he wound up clearing a career-high payday (around $3.5 million, though not sure how much he was left with after having to divvy up with King, Stoney and his ex-wife) after PPV sales topped out at 602,000.

In Roy-Tito, Tito was guaranteed $15 million, with Roy only to get paid from the PPV upside. Though winning the fight, Roy still won't make even half of Trinidad's payday, with sales around 500,000.

So, Tito earned more for this fight than Roy did against Ruiz, even though Tito-Roy did less than Roy-Ruiz.

Roy earned less against Tito than he did against Ruiz, where was able to secure a guaranteed career-high payday AND get paid off of the PPV upside as well.

Not sure I can agree with you, unless we're talking past tense. It was a smart business move by Roy in that he has plenty to bargain with for his next (and perhaps last) big fight. But shrewd it was not, especially since King actually got to pimp his ass out this time around (as opposed to Roy not helping at all w/ the promotion for the Ruiz fight)
actually, Roy had a $10M gaurantee + 60% of the PPV share from the Ruiz fight, and ended up with around $20M.

Ruiz said he was taking the fight for no gaurantee and only a 40% share, just so he could shut Roy up in the ring. Even though he still made money, his plan backfired.

Also, the 500K buys for Jones-Trinidad is based solely HBO's numbers, and doesn't include any of the closed-circuit or international buys. For instance, in Canada, the broadcast was presented by Kingvision with Colonel Bob Sheridan doing the commentary. I think you'd find that the international numbers for this promotion were also strong.

Roy and King probably walked out of this with even a better chunk of change than they expected.

        Trinidad-Jones does 500,000 PPV Buys

There were some scribes who said legendary promoter Don King had lost his touch prior to last Saturday's PPV clash between aging warriors Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In fact, King was ranked only #8 in a recent list of boxing's biggest powerbrokers, however, DKP confirmed on Thursday that Jones-Trinidad attracted more than 500,000 buys, making it one of the biggest boxing pay-per-view successes in recent years. Reached on the phone in Mexico City, where he was officially announcing Peter vs Maskaev for March 8th in Cancun, King told *********.com, "Roy Jones Jr. proved he is still one of the biggest pay-per-view stars in the sport, and I can't say enough about the show Tito and Roy put on for the fans. I urge everyone who didn't see the fight to watch the HBO replay on Saturday night. Roy Jones Jr. is back and look for him to be back in the ring soon. He's on a mission to prove to everyone how great he still is." Official attendance at the Garden for the fight was 12,162.

I don't find it to be so great. I think the PPV success of this fight will only encourage promoters and broadcast companies to put more dubious match-ups on PPV. That's not good for boxing IMO, and it's certainly not good for me. Once upon a time, PPV broadcasts were limited to genuine superfights. Nowadays, any old fight gets there, it seems. Jones v. Trinidad may have turned out better than most people expected (marginally so), but on paper the fight had almost zero significance and was expected to be ****.
