Just wanted to get your opinions guys. Don't know how I missed it but I downloaded the Gatti v Ward rematch and watched it last night. That 3rd round made my jaw hit the floor!
The commentators were saying the first fight was one of the best fights EVER (so, gonna have to go look for that now), but the third round of the rematch was amazing. How Ward stayed on his feet is beyond me. The man has a titanium chin, at one point Gatti was looking to the ref as if to say "please man, stop this fight, he ain't hitting back!" but still, Ward kept coming!
Has to be the best round I've ever seen. What's yours?
We'll probably never see another round as good as Round 9 in the first fight, as long as we live.
They will never allow a round that brutal to continue again.
I remember watching this fight on TV. I had gone to 5 Gatti fights before this one including the one against Millett the fight before. Thought it was going to be a blow out for Gatti because had looked so good in that fight. Plus, I heard he was training correctly with McGirt and stopped ****ing around so much outside of the ring.
Then again, it was Gatti and I knew it could be another life or death.
At the end of round 5 Ward began to come on with about 40 seconds left and put the pressure on Gatti. He hit him with a body punch that froze Gatti and hurt him a bit . I could see it. Then he unleashed a mean combination at the end of the round. At that point I knew it would be something amazing to see.
Round 3 in the second fight was great. Check it out again. Theres a spot where Ward hits GATTI WITH A RIGHT HAND AND LITERALLY KNOCKS THE SNOT OUT OF HIS NOSE. Watch it again you'll see. I was at that fight and it was very one sided after that round. Not as exciting as the other two.
The Third fight had its moments as well. I think it's round 4 or 5 when Gatti broke his hand and Ward hurt Gatti again because he couldnt use it. To me, this was the second best fight of the trilogy. I remember I was at the fight and it was the day of the Belmont Stakes. I bet on Empire Maker and made $350. They had a free buffet at Caesar's with open bar before the fight and I got ****faced. Lennox Lewis was there.
When Gatti broke his hand you could'nt tell at first. A buddy of mine called me and said Jim Lampley thinks Gatti's hand might be broken. I was amazed he kept fighting.
I have seen alot of good fights since then live. Cotto vs Torres, Cotto vs Judah.... None of them generated the excitement of being at the 3rd Gatti-Ward fight though. I was worried I would never feel that excitiement again.
Then I was at Pavlik vs Taylor...
And my prayers were answered haha
It's like there is something about Boardwalk Hall that creates great fights.
