They actually approved it? The positive is, we'll most likely get a Margarito vs Cotto match and that should be very good.

i'm not too happy about it, but then again, gomez is a good competitor and would be a good work out, i think that it is fair for cotto to fight someone like this and not have another mega fight. floyd sint going anywhere and i'm sure there are other fights out there but as for an in between bout gomez would be entertaining to say the least.

although he's not top quality, look at everyone elses career that has taken these kinds of fights, mayweather sticks out in my mind when i think of this kind of stuff, fighting bruesels, gatti, mitchell, sosa, corely. and there are a plethora of other fighters who have done the same thing when they were on top, look at calzaghe fight manfredo, i would say bika but i think he proved to be tougher then anyone expected so i really won't count him. but the list can go on and on.

as long as cotto doesn't make it a habit of fighting the lower tier guys now, mosley did the same thing too, he got up to the top and started fighting lesser competition for a good stretch, so it's something the fighters do, i think out of pacing their careers as well as preserving their health and longevity.

one thing for sure, if the fight does happen you know that it will be exciting and that it won't go the distance.

and if the other match up is true, judah vs margarito, if judah can't get margarito out of there within four rounds, he's a dead man walking............. if any of these match ups are true.

I think that Cotto is very talented and has what it takes to be a great champion. HOWEVER, this will be a big opstacle and possibly a problem if he doesnt take it seriously.

Despite what people Gomez is a gifted fighter that does rise to the occasion.

One the first episode of the contender he was a C class fighter that was an alternate for the show, and he called out unbeaten WBO #3 ranked Peter Manfredo, and beat him by UD.

In July, Gomez was set as an "opponent" for over the hill ring legand Arturo Gatti. Gatti was expected to knock out Gomez, but it was the other way around. Gomez dominated Gatti en route to a 7th round TKO victory.

He followed that up three months later box boxing and out classing former top contender Ben Tackie to a wide margin victory.

Cotto can punch very hard for a 147 pounder but Gomez is the bigger guy with the better chin. Cotto has been holding on for survival against guys at 140. Gomez was taking the best shots from guys who natural Super Middleweights and took the shots well. If Cotto looks fast Gomez, look for these things to come into play. If Cotto tries to make it a brawl look for Gomez to steal rounds. Cotto to win impressivly which he must to keep his Super Star status, he must try and box, and move and stay a mobile target.

That why I think that Gomez has a good shot at beating Cotto.

Its interesting that you dont bring up that Mayweather chose to fight a fighter in Hatton that had only fought once at 147 and almost lost to a mediocre fighter instead of fighting a REAL 147 in Cotto. Mayfeather will continue to fly away from the real credible fighters.

so the DLH fight didn't happen and cotto moved on to Gomez? what happened to Williams, Margarito, Cintron, Collazo, Clottey? and margarito is even fighting on the same night thats so bad. gomez is basically getting a very undesevered shot at the wba welterweight title and a chance to make a name for himself though it isn't gonna happen. I like boxing more the MMA, but something like this would never ever happen in the UFC. top fighters fight top fighters no matter what.

yeah, atleast mayweather fought a #1 undisputed jr welterweight. and he fought judah and dlh and castillo and corrales. Alfonso Gomez is crap. Mayweather has never gone that low in the rankings when he's defended any of his titles.

Gomez >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Emanuel Augustus (22-16-4 at the time). Augustus was so bad the WBC wouldn't even recognize him as a title defence. Try again.
