Burners:: Calzaghe vs. Hopkins fight breakdown...Hopkins UD!!!!

    AS POSTED IN ANOTHER THREAD:::

Im going with Hopkins for many reasons.

Hes bigger and stronger than Calzaghe....at 6-1...and will probly weigh close to 190 come fight night....He weighed 189 against Tarver at 175.

He can rough up Calzaghe. The Sakio Bika fight proved that Calz does not look good against rough tough fighters. Hopkins will head butt..hit on the hip...hit late..hit behind the head...hold..he will do alot of things to frustrate Calzaghe and that will throw Calz off his gameplan.

Another reason is Hopkins counter punching..there is no way in hell Calzaghe will throw all those punches against Hopkins.....that would leave Calzaghe open for huge shots. Hopkins will make Calzaghe pay for every mistake he makes..and Hopkins will as usaul make little if any himself. Hopkins has seen speed before...its nothing new to the sport of boxing.

Joe Calzaghe has the tendency to just let his hands go ODH style and that will cost him going against Hopkins.

Hopkins will make Joe Cal fight on the inside.

Hopkins will smother those pitty pat punches.....Once Hopkins realizes that Calz cant hurt him its over.

Another reason is the defense of Hopkins..hes arguably the best defensive fighter in the sport not named Mayweather or Winky..who he just beat by the way. Hopkins is hard to hit as hell and Joe will find that out rather quickly when hes getting counbter punched to death.

Another reason is that Hopkins is an elite fighter...he has all the tools....How iwll Joe Cal react when his workrate doesnt scare him.....or when he tries to taunt Hopkins and Hopkins doesnt budge....how will he react when Hopkins lands the right hands with his head down leaving no target to hit. Hopkins will also work the body and that will slow Calzaghe down.

And lastly this fight is at 175 pounds..somewhere we havent seen Calz..we seen BHOP move up and DOMINATE the LHW Champ in Tarver.

Hopkins will lose some early rounds thenwin the fight going away. I think Calzaghe will be bruised...bloody and will known he was just in a fight.....and say what you want about Hopkins and his 12 punch a round style....against Calzaghe Hopkins will see a fighter throwing alot of punches which will let Hopkins see alot of counter punching oppurtunities....he will make Hopkins fight at times....but whn Hopkins takes this fight on the inside its over for Calzaghe.

    Hopkins UD.

    8 rounds to 4.

i see it going the same way but i have Bernard 7-5 or winning 6-6 because he will give Joe a FLASH knock down, not a hard punch but more Joe being off balance. so i see its 115-113 or 114-113 B-Hop. Maybe even a majority decision.

It's real simple for me. Calzaghe by decision because Hopkins is 43. I simply don't think Hopkins can throw enough punches to keep up with Calzaghes workrate. I don't think Hopkins at his age can see all of those punches coming either and that will eat away some of his defense.

I do think there's a possibility that Hopkins diminishes Calzaghes workrate with his rough-housing and defensive-minded tactics. But Calzaghe can fight in the clinches himself and simple defense won't win Hopkins this fight.

I don't think this will be a 'masterful' performance by Calzaghe, it will be an ugly, dirty and dull fight and Calzaghe will get the nod because he throws more, kind of like Taylor.

I hope Hopkins can surprise me again and prove me wrong about his age... or another possibility, Calzaghe knocks him out and dominates him.
Either way it's better than what I predict it'll be.

What fight did Calzaghe prove that he can fight inside the clinch specifically? I mean he had a real tough time with Bika and his rough house stuff. And Hopkins is a master at that. (Not taking anything away from Calzaghe, he's a great fighter. Just wondering what fight.)

Also, I pretty much agree with what nmburner said, but I felt you left out the part where Calzaghe doesn't really put his hands up and leaves his chin wide out there. I think Bernard could win the fight on that because it'll show the judges he's landing flush shots and it might score a flash knockdown when Calzaghe gets off a combination and then is off balance.

Calzaghe roughed & beat up both Kessler and Lacy in the clinch. He uses headbutts, elbows, low blows and especially rabbit punches, hitting and holding very well.

If you haven't noticed that I'm not sure what Calzaghe fights you've watched. Hitting and holding is his favorite strategy, that's what he messes up a lot of people's boxing with.

I agree about some of the criticisms of Calzaghe but the age factor could prove to be too much. I simply can't pick a man who is over 40 against a workhorse like Calzaghe.

              Hopkins UD.

              8 rounds to 4.
              1st round Hopkins 10-9

Every other round will be Calzaghes 10-9

Calzaghe will feel Hopkins out for the first round. Then go about his business. After fighting Kessler, Hopkins power will be next to nothing (threatening) for Calzaghe. Calzaghe will swarm him. Hopkins won't be able to hold for long periods. And every period there not holding, Calzaghe will swarm Hopkins again.

He does that to those who like fighting on the inside and for those fighters that posess large power. Sure Hopkins likes fighting on the inside. But Calzaghe won't mind getting in exchanges with him. Calzaghe's work rate is to good.
