  • Kung fu will help me beat Pacquiao: Chris John

The world's top featherweight Chris John says his kung fu training will help him beat Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
He says the speed he developed as the Indonesian kung fu champion has helped him remain undefeated as a boxer and will steer him to victory over the Pac Man.

``Kung fu is what got me into boxing and it has helped me throughout my career,'' John told sportsnut.c**
``I started physical training in kung fu and I have represented Indonesia in that sport. My wife is also a kung fu champion.
``I started boxing when I was five years old, maybe six. My father trained me, he taught me.
``I only had about 20 amateur fights. Not many. But I was always training. I did kung fu mostly when I was young and it helped me when I became a professional boxer.
``It will help me against Manny. He has never fought anyone with my speed.''
John, who holds the WBA 126lb title, is unbeaten in 41 fights with 21 wins by KO and says he has the skills to give Pacquiao a boxing lesson.
``I outboxed Juan Manuel Marquez using speed and movement.
``But In his first fight with Pacquiao, Marquez scored a lot of punches. Marquez could not hit me with those shots. I won a good decision.

``I believe I have the technique to beat Manny. I have the speed to give him a boxing lesson. I am faster than anyone he has fought and I have a better defence. Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter but I have the style to outbox him.''
John next defends his WBA featherweight title against Roinet Caballero of Panama in Jakarta on January 26 2008.
He says he will then pursue a fight with Pacquiao in Las Vegas as the Indonesian hero wants to make a name for himself in America.

I've never heard of this guy, but what an impressive looking record he has.

    Manny or Money?

Chris John vs Jorge Lianares vs Ghost Guerrero should fight each other rather than chasing Packy.

hmmm, Indonesian kung fu. i have some info on some, but i don't remember much of the names.

this almost sucks, cause i am a fan of manny, but i can't root against a martial cousin.

if this guy, chris john, has real skills, he will atleast give manny a hell of a battle.

now i'm off to find some info about chris.

a quick check on this guy shows him having wushu experience.

what is wushu, you may ask. well, wushu is the competitive performance part of kung fu. it is on the opposite end of fighting competitions.

wushu athletes are not looked upon much as fighters. but for all i know, he could have supplemented his performance training with the real ****.

i wrote a small summation of a bit of xing yi in another post - i copied it here for you:

what i can tell you is whet we generally like to do - and this is thoroughly "own" our opponent. now, different people may teach it a little differently, depending on theirs and your characterictics. but if you ever happen to have the good fortune of meeting and playing with a skilled XY guy, you will no what i mean by "owning" an opponent. we like to think of your space, as our space. we just let you occupy it until we want to put you on your ass.

the general flavor is you get power exercises right away, then you learn to master a few movements. the basics are no more than 5 short forms consisting of a move or two apeice. nothing fancy. nothing useless. the thing is, like boxing, these simple movements are drilled endlessly. brought out more in two person drills, and refind in sparring. unlike boxing, the art utilizes a softer approach which pretty much forces you to investigate how to generate power while you learn.

this simple basic movements, don't teach techniques per say, but teach principles of force, energy, and motion - so they can be adapted to any physical art. and since this movements can be strategically linked either destructively or in a creative manner, they can be applied mentally to any situation.

after a few years of practice, where i am at, you notice that people say you feel heavier, more solid. light touches seem to actually hurt people. you find yourself having to be extremely carefull to not injure people. you know what, everytime i think i have a good amout of power, i always find another way to push out even more. it turns out, that eventually, using less and less raw muscle that you would use in the beginning, the more power you get. it is actually scary considering i am still at the beginning.

so much more i could write, but who the hell wants to read 10 paragraphs in a row.
                ---------

check youtube for luo de xiu, su dong chen, tim cartmell and just generally for xing yi/hsing i and bagua. my lineage has many, many proven full contact fighters. gao bagua and hebei xing yi are usually taught together so usually if a guy knows one, he atleast knows the basics of the other.

you can PM me if u have questions.

as for starting back into MA, my advice is to find the best teacher within a hundred miles of you and learn from him or her - no matter what style.

you can PM me with your general location and i can let you know if i find anything near you related to my arts.

I remember a master Pentjak Silat fighter who entered one of the UFC events and had his butt handed to him real quick.

didn't like that video much. especially that patty cake ****. i also don't know **** about silat.

so, a silat guy lost in ufc. no big deal.

then again, you brought it up because it is an indonesian art(i beleive), and that should be somewhat close to what mr chris john practices i'm guessing.
