    • I was reading though this thread and it dawned on me that there's still a good chance RJJ and Calzaghe may yet fight.

Jones said he wants to fight him and if Calzaghe beats Hopkins (which he probably he will) I could see that fight happening.

Assuming RJJ beats Trinidad and looks very good doing it.

        Beat Pavlik or Taylor.

        Now were talking.
Seriously tho, i dont count pavlik, he would only have a punchers chance aganist a prime calzaghe, who would dodge all that Jab-right hand crap and fire back some real ****, Calzaghe would handle Pavlik, unless he got sloppy and started getting hit by that pavlik lead.

        • you fear the ghost. He has a good style to give Calzaghe problems, he's not just going to lose because of Joe's agression or being outworked and his combination of fighting tall and powerfull punching.

that is more than you can say for any single calzaghe fight. pavlik would ko kessler as well.
I disagree and would equate Pavlik's KO of Taylor to Zaghe's one-sided decision over Lacy. Sure Pavlik's win was more dramatic and was in-line with his hard-hitting and busy style. However, you seem not to give Zaghe credit for the Lacy bombardment and I'm not sure why. Is it because you NOW believe that Lacy was overrated, like so many other people NOW believe Lacy was overrated? Don't forget that no one in the fight game, including the vast majority of writers, former Champs and guys taking betting lines, gave Zaghe a chance to beat Lacy, but he did beat him in a manner that was in-line with the way Zaghe fights. Maybe if Zaghe KO's some guys you'd then give him credit like you do Pavlik?

And please don't say that Lacy's performances AFTER Zaghe confirms he was actually overrated. Taylor's inability to get back on track after Zaghe is the result of having the life pounded out of him slowly over 10 rounds. The Lacy that we see today is a shell of the guy he was pre-Zaghe because of Zaghe, which has made him very mentally soft, very uninspired and very beatable.

Some people argue that Lacy also didn't beat anybody before taking-on Calzaghe, so he was falsely regarded as a top-tier fighter. Well, what about Pavlik? Prior to Taylor he knocked out the hard-headed Miranda and Bronco McKart but the guys before Miranda/McKart are not too notable. Then there's Lacy who beat Vanderpool, Sheika, Reid and Pemberton immediately before taking on Zaghe, but Lacy was somehow "overrated"? Come off of it, when Zaghe beat Lacy so badly, he topped a guy that had made his way through some decent ****ers/boxers, the same way that Pavlik had.

Unlike you, I also don't see Calzaghe suddenly being elevated to Elite status by beating Hopkins. The Executioner and Calzaghe will probably give us one of the most boring and probably extremely ugly fights ever witnessed. Their styles make for a disaster of a fight and neither guy will get a chance to look Elite. Unless one guy actually smacks down the other (which is highly improbable) then neither guys has any chance of suddenly "proving" he deserves to receive more cred.

I don't see Pavlik beating either Joe or Kessler. Pavlik likes to mix-it-up and he's a pure fighter, while Kessler is a stronger and more technically sound fighter, who has underrated power for sure. Both pavlik and Kessler have the heart that fans so badly want to see displayed, but their match would be won by the fighter with the better combination of skill, power and defense, which is Kessler.

Don't get me wrong, I like Pavlik's chances and like what he brings to the ring, I just don't see him beating Kessler.

well for one, Lacy is and was overrated just cuz he had a belt. He didn't beat anyone even average for it. you named Vanderpool, Sheika, Reid and Pemberton<---are you serious? Let me tell you, the smw division is easily the weakest division in boxing. So being the best in that division doesn't really say much about how good you are. It only tells you how good you are compared to the others in your division period.

Hopkins will be the first official test of Calzaghe's career. This fight will either make or break him. Just look at it this way if you know soccer: Calzaghe is playing in the division 1 league right now and he is the best player but, nobody really knows how good he is cuz he hasn't been tested in the big leagues. And now that he has signed on to fight hopkins, he is a rookie playing his first game in the English Premier League.
