Ok, heres why i asked this question and made this thread.

I have a co-worker that is a boxing fan as i'am, though i belive i follow boxing more closely but he has been watching boxing before i have.

The other day were were arguing for about an 1 hour or more about, "What is a boxers OBJECTIVE IN A FIGHT?"

    I told him to win.

    He said KO.

I told him that at least in todays boxing most trainers tell a fighter, "if the ko comes it comes, but don't look for the ko."

Then he said that i belive the objective is to win a decicion.

I keep telling him its not that easy.

I told him you can't just go into a fight thinking ko, nor do you train for a ko, but that you train for everything and anything that can happen in boxing, it if the ko comes it come, theres times you just can't get a ko and you have to settle for a descion.

Now, he kept saying that my objective is to win a decsion, no matter what i said.

He said a boxers objective is a ko.

What do you guys think about this co worker, who thinks a boxers objective is to get a ko?

That he does not understand that boxing is a sport, and a KO is only one of the ways to win in this sport.

If a boxer's adjective was to knock every fighter out than, once he found someone with a strong chin, or whose defense just couldn't be cracked- winning a decision would still be a defeat to him. Boxing is very much mental; it's about confidence, and pride, and fear - and how a boxer views himself, his abilities and his opponent. I'm sure Mayweather fights better knowing no matter how much people hate him he has ALWAYS beaten the man in front of him. If a boxer's true goal was to knock his opponent out he'd suffer a mental defeat even before his '0' went.

That said, it's important to point out every once and awhile someone who has personal issues, or who is truly mean, steps into a ring. Sometimes that boxer's goal really is to hurt his opponent and knock them out. I believe Mike Tyson was like that during his prime years. If you read Teddy Atlas' book you'll see Tyson painted as a troubled, violent young man who probably had a genuine desire to see his opponent killed. I think Tyson even had some quotes about wanting to punch people so hard their heart's stopped.

That's the exception to the rule, though. Boxing is not about brutality- violence is just inherent. At its heart boxing is a sport. It has rules and regulations; knocking someone out is just one facet of a very complex game. Tell him he's making it an oversimplifcation.

You were right, and he has probably never stepped foot in a ring in his life.

IMO first and foremost it's about getting the win. I mean why even compete if your not out there to win. I know there probably has been guys that just fought for the check, but it's about winning. Boxing though is one of the few sports where providing excitement and enertainment plays a big role as well. Winning will definitely help you get the big money ex: Mayweather, and also providing an exciting fight everytime out can earn you the big checks ex: Gatti.

It is to win 6 or 7 of 9 rounds and then quit with 3 rounds left, or to win 3 or 4 of 6 rounds and then the ref stops it when your eye is falling out of your face.

Then you can claim you won the fight and your fanboys can claim you never really lost a fight.

fighters usually fight less often nowadays so in fact their ko percentages are higher nowadays.

tell your friend to take a look at the ko percentages of fighters like willie pep, miguel canto, carlos ortiz, emile griffith, harry greb, wilfred benitez, and many other greats.

they must've not achieved the "objective" of boxing quite often according to your co-worker's ****** logic.

The object for a boxer is to lie down in the THOID. You got that? The THOID! If your pug ass ain't on the canvas listening to the count by the end of de THOID ROUND den you got problems, capiche?

The object is to win as quickly as you possibly can.

the object of boxing is to dance, jump around, talk to your opponent, and most importantly have fun in there.
Enjoy yourself, that's the most important thing. It's not all about winning, it's about enjoying yourself, and having a great time in the ring.

The object of a boxers objective is to **** the ring girl, unless that ring girl is Oscar De La Hoya.
