  • How much respect would you lose for Floyd if...

He did come back at lightweight, and beat Pacquiao and Juan Diaz, instead of Cotto and Williams at welterweight (assuming he would have won against all of those guys)?

You still have an undefeated prospect in Juan Diaz, much like Williams, except that he has accomplished a lot more in the lightweight division than Paul has in the welterweight division, which is not to say that Paul won't accomplish more, but as of now...

Pacquiao is quite a bit more accomplished than Cotto as well... he beat Morales twice, Barrera twice, and drew with Marquez. This is assuming he beats Marquez in his upcoming fight to (I know, there are a lot of what-if's in this scenario, just bear with me).

Would you all downgrade him for beating these two at 135?

I think it's actually an improvement over the current plan.

My respect for Floyd would be the same, but it wouldn't make sense. He hasn't faced the best of the WW division, he still has something to prove.

On the other hand a fight with Pacquiao would be epic.

If he takes care of Cotto he can do what the hell he likes, I'd rather see him fight Cotto than Pacman any day.

I agree with you... If he does actually go after the two I cited in the first post, I think their better resumes would make up for the advantages Floyd gets for fighting at a lower weight.

I wish he had time to do both, because that would prove A LOT.

Yes, he would lose much respect from me. Why would the man kill himself to make weight so he could fight those smaller men?

he said he only walks around at 149, why not go to 140 or 135...everybody else does it

Because that's what everyone else in the sport does...?

Keep in mind how big they blow up on fight night, compared to how Floyd stays the same. It's not like he would have a HUGE size advantage, it would be pretty minor IMO.

Four pounds on Pac. Zero pounds on Guzman.

So everyone in the sport drops down two weightclasses from what they fight at?

I can see the argument being made about Floyd coming from these lower weights, and that he's not really heavy at Welter. But the man is in constant training, in top shape every day of the year.
The man has absolutely no weight to lose. It's not like he can drop 10 pounds of fat like Ricky Hatton can before fighting.

So my question still stands, why would he kill himself to make weight so he can fight those smaller guys?
I can dig that he drops down 5-7 pounds to fight Pacman, but doesn't really understand why he would bother when he got all kinds of challenges around him at Welter.

Oh, and Floyd would whoop Pacman and anyone else at lower weights.

Dude, everyone kills themself to make weight if that's what you call it. It's called dehydrating yourself... that is how fighters blow up close to 20 pounds overnight. Floyd doesn't dehydrate himself at all, so he could easily make 140, and probably 135 if he wanted to.

Well this is purely hypothetical too... Obviously it isn't going to happen, but Dios's gag article actually made me think that it was an interesting concept if it ever happened.
