Cotto took on a legitimate ex-champion in Bazan only 14 fights into his career. Roughly one and a half years later he wins his first title, beating the living daylights out of Kelson Pinto. In between these points in time he beats eventual title holders in N'dou and Maussa.
Cotto then proceeds to make 6 defenses of his WBO title, beating some of the very best fighters the division CURRENTLY has to offer in Paul Malignaggi, Randall Bailey and Ricardo Torres.
Upon Cotto's move to his second weight class, he beats a top unbeaten prospect in Carlos Quintana for his second world title. It's not the linear title, but Cotto gets a piece of the pie. He then goes on to beat a world class European champion (Urkal), the former lineal Welterweight champion (Judah), and a faded Hall of Fame caliber fighter (Mosley).
As it stands, I believe Cotto's last 11 fights have been title fights. Only two of his opponents have survived the distance in that stretch. Roughly 35% of his career to date have been title fights. If we assume he continues to win or he continues to stay at this pace, by the time he matches Mayweather's record of 39 fights, 48% of his activity would be involved with title fights. Cotto has beaten 9 current or former champions to date as well if that does it for you.
He IS following in Floyd's foot steps. As boxing fans, we should want Floyd and Cotto to fight. There is nothing to be afraid of. If Cotto loses, all of his fans will live happy lives. If Floyd loses, nobody here is going to die...and if you lose sleep over it then you need to re-evaluate life in general.
These are the two best fighters in their division and they are both in their prime. If Cotto is BETTER than Floyd, he'd beat him in the ring when this fight is eventually (hopefully) made. If Floyd is better, he'll beat Cotto and leave no doubt that he is the better man.
Cotto won't prove anything with respect to Floyd by beating De La Hoya. He'll only prove that he's capable of beating Oscar on a given night. Floyd is a different animal. It'll take these two fighting each other to see who is the better guy.

Maybe if Cotto would've fought off of his back foot he would've never gotten hurt? Definitely glove on the canvas, that's called a knock down buddy, don't recall seeing PBF touch the canvas before, somehow that old never has been managed to do it.
